Run a DLL as an App is attempting to acess the Internet. Norton brings this up and says it is low risk. DoesThe anyone know what it is?
Application:C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe
Protocol:UDP (Outbound)
We have been trying to network 2 computers. I wonder if that is where it comes from? Another forum, I know, but my machine with winme will let his use my stuff but his with xp has a firewall we can't seem to get past..

Funny you mention that!!I have been looking at just that very file.As far as I can tell it has somthing to do with system restore.Either that or power management.
Anyone else have any insight on this?

RZA, I don't want it to have instant access to the internet unless I know for SURE it is something I need to have access the internet to run correctly...it wasn't coming up before we started messing with the network thing. That is why I thought maybe it had to do with that? Hey, Norton is asking the question too, lol.

I have seen the RUNDLL errors and references from time to time and I think it is used for a few things by PCs but I don't really know for sure.
I did a search on lycos (i think) and this is the first thing that popped up (after I tried Microsoft and found NOTHING!!) This is from a forum on annoyances.org

If I'm not mistaken, that's your computer trying to talk to the DNS PC on your cable system. This is a necessary thing as DNS resolves FQDN's (fully qualified domain names) to IP addresses.

"Run A DLL" tried to access internet, Why?? (MJohnson: Saturday, August 18, 2001 at 7:39 pm)

Maybe "newgrl" can shed some light on it - I gather from some of her posts that she works for microsoft - that's just a guess on my part tho!

Anyhoo....HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Rundll32 has associations with close to a quarter of the files listed in the FOLDER OPTIONS lists of file types and what opens them - the 3rd tab.
In ME they call it 'CRYPTO-SHELL EXTENSIONS" and "CONFERENCING UTILITY DLL" in Win 95 it was called rundll32.exe and dealt with URLs and internet certificates and such.
I was poking around on a old IBM APTIVA with 95 on it and found all those rundll32s there.

Just in case anyone ever looks here again!

BTW I have now done ME reinstall (full) #3!!

Ta-Ta, Toodle-oo!
