You can use any brand of ram as long as its compatible.

If your not sure what kind of ram you need you can try crucials memory upgrade tool. http://www.crucial.com/. Its on the left. Pick your PC..gateway.. then select your model. You will be prompted with the amount and type of ram you can have-use.

Its possible your new stick of ram is damaged or dead. To test this.. remove the old ram and just install the new stick by itself. If you have problems with it.. Your new ram is damaged or its not compatible.

It is easy to say just stick in a new ram, but in reality it involves earthing the base unit against static and taking out/putting in the right ram in slots, whatever they are. Ordinary folk probably have no option but to take it to a dealer and let them do it.

I disagree.. Im an ordinary folk and i installed my ram just fine :).

Grounding is a good thing but i rarely do it unless im on carpet or feel extra clingy that day. Holding the chip by the board and not touching the stuff on it is "usually-IMO" enough. That is.. if your pc case gives you a clear shot and your not taking the whole box apart to service it. Some of the OEM's use cheap boxes.. you have to remove the motherboard to install ram.

Go to www.kingston.com and enter your system info. (make, model, etc.) It will tell you all you need to know about how much RAM your system can take and much more.

I did not even own a PC till October of 2000 , I was a complete newbie to the world of computing .I upgraded my RAM (easiest of all upgrades I've done ) from 128MB SDRAM to 256MB SDRAM . I,ve installed a sound card PCI and a Graphics card a internal CD-RW and I also added a slot fan for extra cooling .All of these upgrades can be done by anyone that is good at folllowing directions and asking ?'s ! Thanks Nick

One more thing to possibly look at is the type of RAM stick you are inserting. Are you using a PC100 or a PC133. The best thing to do is use the same that is already installed. I have a Compaq and tech support told me that it didn't matter if I mixed-n-matched the types...but it did.

Jet,
Personally ive never run into a problem while using pc100 or pc133 but i remember a guy here who claimed it could cause a problem for some motherboards. Your post/experience helps confirm this.

Thanks.
