OS: Win ME
CPU/Ram: Pentium II, 127
Comment:

I have just inserted a 256MB Ram into the slot in my computer replacing the old 64MB Ram. However, after starting my computer it shows that there is only 127MB Ram. Why and what should I do?
(PS. the old ram is PC-100)

Since it's a Pentium II, it's surprising it dos ANYTHING with 256.

is it a slot 1 PII? is the FSB 100? you can get a PIII 500mhz that will work in you machine on e-bay for under $20. do you have 3 slots for ram on the board. 128mb is probably the max for each slot. can also be had on e-bay very cheap. make sure you get pc100 non error checking this is what I did with my PII 350mhz 64ram. now its PIII 500 256 ram

you have double density ram so reads only 128meg so need single density ram to read 256meg

Go to your computer manufacturers website. Get the specs for your system. Check to see what the total MAX ram for your system is and also the MAX size a Ram strip can be for each slot.

It's definitely a density issue. There's nothing you can do to get the other 128mb recognized, you simply bought the wrong kinda RAM for your board.

This link will explain....if you want the quick answer, read "step 6":

if you are installing 256Mb DIMM memory (Dual Inline Memory Modules) and the Mainboard only takes SIMM memory (Single Inline Memory Module, you will end up having 127Mb of System Memory. Its a memory chip issue.

I think Rob's got it.

The slots are likely SIMM.

Your question has already been answered!

You are attempting to run high density RAM in a board designed for low density RAM. There is nothing you can do to get the full 256mb recognized...NOTHING! You either have to live with it at 50% capacity, or you buy the correct RAM for your board. That is, PC100 low density RAM.

Asus A7N8X-X
2500+ Sempron @ 2100mhz
10.5 x 200mhz @ 1.80v
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

You obviously didn't bother to check the link I posted, so here's a clip that explains:

"If you try to install a higher density DIMM than your computer can handle, one of two things will happen: 1) Your computer will not boot, and you will receive memory POST beeps, letting you know there is a problem. 2) The motherboard will only recognize half of the memory."

Asus A7N8X-X
2500+ Sempron @ 2100mhz
10.5 x 200mhz @ 1.80v
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB
