RAM ISSUE - New RAM incompatible w/ old?

System: Dell Latitude CPx-H 450 Mhz PIII Notebook with 128Mb RAM, with two DIMM slots.

Problem: Upon installation of additional 128Mb RAM (PNY Technologies), system resets constantly upon load of Windows ME. No safe mode nor step-by-step mode with no drivers loaded would generate a successful start-up w/o resets.

Actions taken:

1) Thinking the new DIMM defective I exchanged the new 128Mb DIMM for a new 256Mb. Exact same problems encountered.

2) Booted computer using each DIMM individually with no problems. Only when the two chips are both installed is there a problem.

3) Have switched both DIMMs between slots (128mb and 256Mb in Ports 1 and 2, respectively, and then in Ports 2 and 1, respectively). No change- computer resets continually whenever both DIMMS are in.

4) Ran MemTest86 with the following results:

a) With only one DIMM in the system at a time, neither DIMM generated any errors after 3 passes.

b) With BOTH DIMMS in the system, one error was generated after 1 pass in Test 7.

Question: Is it possible that these two DIMMS are incompatible with each other? Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

hello cmotes

are both your ram slots working? Have u tried to experiment whether one of the slots is defective? Your description of the problem didnt include testing the slots....

Zed-

Please let me know how to test the DIMM ports, I don't know how. I did move a DIMM for slot 1 to slot 2 (thus slot 1 is open instead of slot 2) and I'm able to boot and run the machine no problem.

Post #2's suggestion makes sense... this might be a compatibility issue between two different brands of RAM.

Thanks
