I have a Pent III, Dell Dimension 4100, 2001, 933mz, 384 RAM, Windows ME OS. I run a lean machine. Only system needs in my start up. Originally my computer had 128MB RAM. I added 256MB. I am now experiencing either of 2 messages "dangerously low system resources". Or, with no applications open, "Not enough memory, you must close one or more applications". I read an article that said there was a little know bug in ME where if more RAM is added, windows reallocated the lion's share and left nothing for system support. It didnt offer a "fix it", or an email addy to request resources to correct it. I went to MS site and they only addressed a virtual mem error. My settings for that are correct according to what MS recommends. Can you help..

are you managing your own virtual memory or letting windows do it? try setting it yourself.

i've found that on some machines when you add
ram it's worth going into the bios and saving the changes without making any, then reboot. works on some and not others. you could check msconfig for startup stuff you dont need. also in msconfig, go to advanced and check what the limit memory box is set to. and just in case you did'nt know, go to
control panel, system, performance, file system harddisk and make it a network server.
that will speed it up a little.

I am allowing windows to manage virtual mem which is what MS recommended. The "not enough mem, shut down 1 or 2 progs" was the beginning. Now Im moving onto the sys depletion error. (I understand sys needs is the amount of ram set aside to support the system when on.) Its driving me crazy. Ill start out with 92%, sign on line and dropped to 57%. Other times I start at 82/85% and drop to 27% or the death cry of critical system resources error. I dont know if these errors are caused by one and the same prob.

Guru, Im not concerned with speed. If Im not online, speed is cool. BUT I can so much as often my dictionary and without getting the "not enough mem" error. Online, is when I start getting both errors, loss of sys resources and not enough ram. I have a very lean start up. Only system needs there. Online, I dump my temp internet files daily. I allow no cookies or objects. window temp files, the same way. I have a large HD but I dont pack up with junk. Windows is recognizing the new mem. I suspect misallocating, but I dont know how to fix it. Desi

It sounds like something hooked into internet explorer is broken or badly made and is eating your resources.

If cacheman doesn't sort it out, it may be worth it to go through your add/remove programs list and uninstall ANYthing that is attached to IE or working off it's API's.

See if that doesn't solve your problem... then add them back one at a time to see which one is causing the problem.

Have you used AD-Aware from Lavasoft.de to check for Spyware/ADware on your system? These can eat up resources.

You could also try the disk clean up with DELINDEX.bat. There my be something like corrupted icons or huge index.dat files causing a problem. Worth a try if you like a clean machine, is do not mind losing web site logon passwords.
