This is a question, not a problem. None of these files is causing me a problem
I have several files in my root C:\ and I don't know why they are there. I've searched in Google and in this site, but I can't find anything.
I'm running Windows Me on an IBM computer. I think that's all you need to know. The files are:
setupxlg.txt
A whole bunch of files: s3s9ntf9.* (1, 2, 3)
os748099.bin
faclog.txt
egatherer.xml - something to do with an IBM diagnostics program?
dshell.txt
drivez.log
bootcat.log - I know this contains information about the "boot catalog", but what is the boot catalog? Is it the same as the boot record?
aspi32.exe is in a folder called aspi. What does it actually do?? What will happen if I run it after the computer finishes booting? Thanks.

I can provide the contents of those files that are text files if that would help.

Hello Len,
Its hard to find out which onse are required and which onse are not because when you format your HDD and install windows, almost all the files that you get in c: are necessary onse, but when you keep running the windows, you keep getting some more files with the passage of time and even a scandisk would generate a file, and all the softwares that you have would have some files affiliated with them, So its hard to tell exactly which onse you need without having details about all the softwares that you have, and if you want to get rid of them you can send them to the recycle bin and restart your computer and if nothing bad happens, you can remove the files from the recycle Bin too but if you get an error message or something you can restore them again, BUT what I would recomend is that if you would get a software like "System Mechanic" then you won't have so many problems because that would scan your computer for many things even the duplicate files and would tell you the detail and ask for removal etc, Have a Nice Day.
