Kevin, Google says pup.exe is a Trojan and apparently, it is hard to clean. Try TEMPORARILY disabling restore and see if you can go to one of the online scans to get rid of it. If that doesn't work, there are other things to try. Let us know.
Housecall online scan - http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp
Panda scan - http://www.pandasoftware.com/
Norton's scan - http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
HTH.

I'm a complete novice but someone on another forum said they got rid of pup.exe by updating and running Ad-aware. I know that is for spy companies but they swear it gets rid of this particular virus/trojan

Kevin,

"hey i ran housecall online and it said i had 20+ infected files, all of which were non-cleanable"

WHERE, did it say, they were located? In the restore maybe. If so, disable "System Restore", restart (reboot) the computer, and scan again. If it comes up with nothing, enable "System Restore", and restart (reboot) the computer.

If it's a running program (or such), it will have to be terminated first. (not running) Either in safe mode, or ctrl+alt+delete, and end task.

"I don't have adaware and dont know where to find it either."

Download Lavasoft Ad-aware

You can get it there. Be sure to update it, before you run it. It has help files, to help you. They also have a forum, if you need more help with it.(Ad-aware)

Good Luck

Kevin,

About the "System Restore", this, will give you an explanation. Quite possibly, there was an explanation, on the scanning site. But, oh well ;-)

As I said in my last post, there are help files, and a forum for it. Better, to get it from the horses mouth, as they say
:-)

You're Welcome Kevin,
and Good Luck

Pup.exe and over.exe are both installed by a 1536 byte program called do.exe. As long as you have it, Internet Exploreer will keep returning you to http://achtungachtung.com and reinstalling pup and over. I picked up my copy on redirect from http://default-homepage-network.com, which also installed bs5-nt15v and CS4P028, and a file and a .bat file both named "o" which together make up a set of ClearSearch spyware. Good luck.
