I recently connected to a web page that activated my Norton Personal Firewall alert to a LOADER.exe ALERT. I shut down and rebooted and I now get a message that says that there is a start up dll file missing - psapi.dll. How can I restore it. I have downloaded the file, but I don't know where to put it so it will start up. I have placed it in my system32/drivers file, but that didn't work. I am stumped. Thanks

I am having EXACTLY the same problem!! Not sure where to intall the psapi.dll file, tried it in same folder as you, srginmv, but with no luck.
KKK, cannot find c:\system\32 ???

I'm stumped also. Have either one of you downloaded, and installed a SDK (software development kit). Also, srginmv where did you download this file from?
Now, if your running XP, 2000, NT, 2003 Server, or you installed software (e.g. visual studio) that needs it. That would be a different story. I don't think WinME uses that file, itself. But, I've been known to wrong before :-)

I have also experienced the same problem on the 22 Sept 03 suggesting that this is a result of a virus, worm or bug. I am using Windows 98. On this date there was an attemp to automatically load a file (unfortunately I did not witness this as my wife was using the computer)and cannot remember the filename. It required re-booting to initialise, I told my wife simply to close it and not re-boot.
I now, therefore, also want to re-install or find this DLL.

I also had the same problem of a missing PSAPI.DLL file every time I booted the system. I believe the problem came from a web page that tried to automatically load a file. I went into the startup list and removed the program "loader.exe". I used regcleaner to remove it, otherwise it can be unselected using msconfig. This seemed work for me. good luck.

Forwarded response from Kamibu:
I have had exactly the same problem.
Look, if you have the new files iedll.exe and loader.exe on your hard disk.
If yes, you probably caught spyware.
ad-aware or norton antivirus will not detect this.my help was the freeware "cwshredder" from www.spywareinfo.com, which can
solve this problem.good luck

PS. Can you post this advice in computing.net to help also other people. My
try to do this myself did not work. Registration was not accepted. I donīt
know why.

I have the Windows 98 operating sysytem and on 9-24-03 I too recieved the error message when I started up my computer that I am missing this file. I have tried all of the suggestions previous to 9-26 that are posted with no luck. I need some help to remove please.
Alan

Hi !!
I had the same problem and I have solved it:
First, I have removed the iedll.exe and loader.exe files.
After that, I have cleaned the register with RegSupreme.
It works!!Good Luck

I too have this problem. I used Alurias spyware remover and MaCafee Virus detector on Sept 19 2003 and found I had an infected file associated with this dll and instead of trying to clean it I think I deleted the infected file. Since then I get this message and some of my files aren't working right. I will try responce #9 to correct this problem.

I'm on win98 but xp is the same.
If you use some sites for free software, they can install progs' in your windows folder:
iedll.exe + loader.exe [delete them]
[psapi.dll usually isnt needed]
go to start menu/run/<type>msconfig
go to startmenu check for them to run.
if yes untick~disable them.
my regclean didnt delete the entry, so:
go to Startmenu/run/<type>regedit
work down~
currentuser/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run- till you find:
iedll.exe + loader.exe
right click on each name in turn in the righthand panel and delete.
close regedit and reboot

I'm on win98 getting the same.... I tried the freeware "cwshredder" from www.spywareinfo.com and PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Response number 11 worked. Was not in a position to download software to resolve problem. Cheers.

To all who helped. Thank you. Response number 11 is the fix. Removed it no problemo. Thanks again to all for your help.

Hi, Im running windows 98 and have had the same problem starting 29/9/03.
In the last few weeks I have had to remove Iedll.exe, loader.exe and gaitor's trickler from the registery.
iedll.exe seems to be back.
To stop the message go into start/run/(type)msconfig and then click on the startup tab. Now find iedll.exe listed there, un-tick it. Apply this and when you re-boot the message will not appear.
Really speaking you should use regedit to remove all traces of this programe; but the above will get your comp. to start properly.
I suspect that my psapi.dll is still there somewhere and does not need to be reinstalled, I have yet to look into it.
If your psapi.dll has been deleted there is every chance that you don't really need it on your system anyway - it may run fine without it.

yeharrr -
i have same problem (I am also computer
ignorant) - i hit start/run and typed
msconfig. where is start up tab. i cant
find iedll.exe. can you help.

The startup tab is on the right hand side of the system config utility <msconfig>
all the progs that are set to run at startup are ticked.
so if any of them are named iedll.exe,loader.exe. untick them.
that will prevent them starting.
then go> startmenu/find. type the above names
search your C:\drive, if and when you find it/them [they're/its there, cos they run]
Delete the b*gg*rs

What effects did happen, if we delete iedll.exe and loader.exe ??
and both that function to working on ?thanks

If I understand your ? correctly, bunaken:
Answer=
both iedll.exe+loader.exe, are installed by websites when we are downloading free software.
They are like spyware. Delete them.
psapi.dll file isn't in a win98 installation.

I had the same problem w/the psapi.dll file and im using Windows Millenium Edition. I followed Response 11 and it worked for me.
Thank you

I have had a similar problem. The other day the message said "PSAPI.DLL not found.." I found PSAPI.DLL and placed in in my windows system folder. Then when I rebooted the message said "PSAPI.DLL Linked to NTDLL.DLL: nt allocates virtual memory".
Then I found the above string of messages and followed #11. On rebooting I no longer see the previous messages but get "You are using Selective Startup for Troubleshooting " and an OK box. I followed went to msconfig general tab and normal starting had already been checked and the new problem didn't go away.
What do I do now?

I checked on a fresh, newly installed Win98SE: none of the files iedll.exe, loader.exe, psapi.dll is part of it. I think a website downloaded the first two into my computer, and they are some sort of spyware. The programmer probably assumed that psapi.dll is already in my computer, so this is why I am getting that error message. I wouldn't be surprised if I learned that psapi.dll is part of WinNT, 2000 or XP...
I followed response number 11. I also deleted iedll.exe and loader.exe from c:\windows by hand. I am happy now.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thanks to Nuke_m for the suggestions. In your October 4, Response #18, regarding the deletion of C drive iedll.exe and loader.exe files, I was able to delete the iedll but not the loader because it was being used by windows. How can it be deleted?
Thanks to all for the various inputs.

1st, stop it starting again in win98/xp:
goto~start menu/run/<type>msconfig,
select the startup tab,
untick the box next to loader.exe and iedll.exe if present, click apply, then ok
[this stops it starting at bootup]
reboot
now delete loader.exe and iedll.exe if present.
Beware, that some websites will keep adding them. Its only happened once to me tho.
happy to help, others have helped me over the years.

I picked up this annoying little bugger, also. Norton antivirus lists it as Trojan.ByteVerify and will catch and quarantine it. However, it installs a macro that doesn't get detected. I run Win98SE. Here's what I did:
1. Delete the Quarantined files.
2. Delete the Loader.exe and IEDLL.exe files from C: drive.
3. Follow response 11 for startup coinfig.
4. Delete ALL Registry entries for the both files to be safe.
5. It also replaced my WMPLAYER.exe with its own code. WMP Ver9 EXE can be found and extracted from C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Installer\mpsetup.exe. Properties showed "Hole" as the program description on the version tab for C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. Delete it and replace with the extracted one if you have the same description.
6. You may want to check your favorites list for explorer. It added links to sex sites on mine.
7. Reboot and any traces of the bug should be gone.As for the PSAPI.DLL file. It never existed on my system to begin with. System File Checker under the MSCONFIG utility had no record of it being dleted. It was a false error generated by the bug.
Hope this helps.

i've been interupted by this annoying error message whenever i start my windows. I've tried to copy this dll file from my friend and paste it to the c:\system\32 but didn't work. Pls help me...

To ruffy:
For christ sake read the above answers, there's a point where we all start to get fed up repeating the same in depth answer u know...
Responce number 11 or Nuke_m

I have Win98 and was getting the PSAPI.DLL message as well. I went to Find Files or Folders, looked up iedll.exe and loader.exe, deleted them then rebooted. IT DID THE TRICK.
