Is there some way to avoid letting websites see your ip address? I have just gotten a direct connection (dsl). I am running norton internet security. It has intercepted two attacks. Both were backdoor/subseven trojan. If someone really wants in they will get in, I want to surf anonymously. Is there some way to do that? I have tried anonymity 4 proxy, no good. I can't properly set it up because I need a public ip, I only have a private one. I also tried zero knowledge "freedom" it doesn't seem to work. It will not let me connect to the internet at all. Does anyone have any ideas or websites that I may find helpfull. Thanks in advance. I'll post if i find something in the meantime.

Pick yourself up a used P 100 or better and give Linux a try (if you have a couple of months to spare). If not, load on Win9x and some proxy software like Browsegate or Sygate or Whatevergate. Configure your internal network privately and let the proxy do the rest. Good information can be found by searching for "proxy servers". I've tried several and so far I've found Linux to be superior to any Windows based firewalls. Like I mentioned though, Linux is a steep learning curve but you do get the most protection. Good luck.

Linksys BFSR-41 Cable/DSL router $140.00...

You can not surf without leaving your IP and MAC address all over the place. Zero Net in Canada and a few others will sell you a service yet all of the speed benifits of your DSL will be lost waiting to bounce your traffic over zillions of hops! No offence but you are paranoid! Sub seven and alike are common. People run port sniffers to see woh has the trojan of the day (the trojan opens the port in your system OWKA THE BACK DOOR) IF you do not have Net Bus or Sub 7 than the port scanner sniffs the next IP address, etc. If you actually have the trojan than they will run the client and blammo they are in like Flynn! I think that those software firewalls are a waste of system resources, money and cause stress. When networked you are broadcasting your IP etc. and so is everyone else. This site uses Flycast for CGI and they are able to keep track of your prefs., habits and IP. Nothing new nothing to get alarmed about. You can find out what ports are open on your system by going to a DOS box and typing "NETSTAT /A" the result will show any open port. 1243 is Sub 7 go here to read up on it http://www.doshelp.com/trojanports.htm

Holy smoke man settle down. I know they are common. I'm not alarmed about anything. I was just asking for some info and yes of course the anonymous proxy programs and public proxy servers bounce your info and takes away any speed that you may have gained over a 56k modem. I was just asking if anyone had programs or system settings that they prefer and then I would give them a go to. Relax. Thanks for the dos info. That's why I am here, 'to learn'.
