I currently have windows ME, and I recently tryed to defrag my computer numerous times but no luck. I have tryed for several days now and all it gets up to is 1%. The defrag stays on all day and it stays on 1% all day . It never changes. If I can get some information on how to solve my problem, I would be very greatful.

Thank you for your prompt consideration.

Do you have a screensaver active ? If yes go to your settings and put none under screen saver. Make sure you close down anything running in the background. If anything interupts the defrag utility it starts over! I would also run scandisk B/4 defraging, have it set to automatically fix any errors. Disable your anti-virus software. Hopefully someone else can offer somemore advice. Good Luck,Nick

Anita I had problems with my winMe PC a few months ago and this was the advise I received from one of the computer forums.
Restart your computer, keep pressing the F8 key until the screen stops and choose the option Safe Mode. Safe Mode bypasses many startup files. Loads only the basic system drivers. I myself do clean disk, scandisk and defrage in this order every 4 months and it always takes a little less then 4 hours.

Work Hard, and do your best, It'll make it easier on the rest of us...

I have seven programs running when I defrag and Scandisk (thorough scan) with no hiccups at all - these include AV and a firewall.

Are you running any Ram optimizers at all?
If so, disable them for when before I used one (RamIdle/Cacheman), they interrupted the process.

Recently after using Norton Disk/Win Doctor for a hour before uninstalling it, the same problem returned but after using Dustbuster (not recommended) and Regcleaner, all's back to normal again.

I was told to do what Response # 4 said and found it is not necessary to do this but that once.
Response # 1 covered everything I tried and it works. I also ck. ctrl/alt/delete to be sure nothing is running but Explorer. It is ESSENTIAL to scandisk first tho and to make sure you have the AUTOMATICALLY FIX ERRORS box checked. All errors must be fixed for defrag to work once this problem seems to invade the computer.
Good luck!
