Please tell me what to do about this. I posted a
couple of weeks ago, about problems I'd been having with a CDRW drive
that was replaced under my in-home extended warranty. Boy, am I
beginning to wish I had gotten the cheaper depot warranty. This tech
they keep sending is a real piece of work. First, they send this guy
all the way from Pensacola, Florida. You'd think they would have a
tech closer to my home, which is in central Alabama, about 50 miles
north of Montgomery. Well, he gets here and starts informing me my
problems are probably software related. I disagree. Anyway, he goes
into my registry to delete references to 2 second ide hard disk
controllers he found in device manager under hard disk controllers.
One was primary IDE controller, dual fifo, one was secondary IDE
controller dual fifo. Then he goes back into device manager to remove
the Intel 82801AB Bus Master IDE Controller. I had an AA and a AB in
this category. He said the AB was a second hard drive, which I don't
have and he claims all these extra drivers and ghost drivers are
causing conflicts with the burner. Before he left, he told me I had
a very unstable system, my recovery CDs where corrupt, and that they
pretty much weren't going to come back and fool with my computer
again. First, I didn't pay $315 for a 3 yr. in-home warranty, for
them to send a sappy tech to my home to inspect my home and decide it
was my fault my burner wasn't working as intended. The guy he was
talking to on the phone for help kept coming up with other things it
could be, like my electricity. So, this tech starts looking at my
power outlet, and tells him I have more than the computer hooked up
there. I have a 6 outlet plug in on the wall, where I have the surge
protector to my computer plugged into. I also have 2 other small
surge protectors plugged into that,I mean the wall outlet, with their
own breakers, that on one is my air conditioner, and the other i have
my cordless phone and caller ID box plugged into. The computer surge
protector only has computer stuff plugged into it, the computer,
monitor and printer. I paid over $70 for that battery backup
protector, which seems to do a good job to me. It sure is funny to
me that I have always had this computer plugged in like this and
never had problems with my burner until it quit reading CDS about a
month ago, and they came out and replaced it and then the replacement
started having all kinds of errors. I never used to get all these
errors when burning. So, the tech and his phone jockey decided it is
my fault and they informed me that they would not come back until I
got rid of everything plugged into that wall outlet, except for
anything related to my computer. They both kept telling me I needed
to reformat to get rid of those ghost drivers in hard disk
controllers. I told them it wouldn't get rid of them, as I've used my
recovery disks and they are always there. The computer had those
extra drivers when I got it. That's why the tech says my recovery
software is corrupt. He also said whoever was loading it at HP
before selling the computers didn't know what they were doing, or you
wouldn't get ghost drivers. Needless, to say, I'm thinking seriously
about contacting the President's Office at HP about this. This is
just the company they sub the work out to. Who are they to decide if
they'll service my warranty? And the tech was telling me next time I
should build my own computer, not to buy a name brand, because
they're nothing but trouble. Not just HPs, but any name brand. Not
only that, but I got an error with this new drive, and I clicked on
details to find out about the error, and it said something about
checking the cables to make sure they were connected correctly. The
tech told me last time he was here that it was set up cable select
and not master and slave. He said HPs weren't normally set up like
that, only Compaq. Well, he said he put it master and slave
yesterday. I told him why did he change it from cable select, and he
gave me crap about it was always master, slave. I don't think this
guy knows what he is doing. I am beginning to wonder if maybe all my
problems is, is that he hasn't got a good connection on the cable?
He said there is nothing else it could be, but my electricity, or the
software. I believe faulty or incorrectly placed cable could cause
problems, can't they? Was he supposed to go in the bios to do
anything about making it master and slave? I have an HP 7845, in
case you need to know that. The new CDRW drive they put in here
this time, was faster than the original one. The original one was an
8 x 4 x 32 and this one is a 12 x 8 x 32. I got the error while
burning directly from one CD to another at 12x speed. I just turned
off everything in the background with Ctrl. alt. delete, and slowed
it down to 4x, and it made a copy this time. Can anyone advise me as
to what to do about this now? If I continue to have problems or have
problems in the future, what am I going to do, if they sub out the
work to this company?

Shew,...that was some rough reading.I don't know about the mess that's been created here, but I can tell you that Air Conditioner should be on a cicuit all by it's lonesome, not it's own surge protector. That's the way I "deciphered" your setup anyway.I can also tell you you'll have less problems and better burns if you save to disk first, and burn from there.
About all that other gobbledy-gook,I would just call HP and raise HOLY HELL.My first PC was an HP...2 days later,it died.Took it back, split the cost w/Best Buy for the next model up...3 months later,it died.Went back, got a top o' line Compaq, with no out-of-pocket expense so I could get as far away from HP as possible. As luck would have it...3 days later, their intended merge/buyout was announced.Damn!
Extremely pleased w/ my Compaq.

That power setup is not good for computers, but has nothing to do with the CD-RW problem. The CD-RW do work better if set to master, but cable select also works. And thekid is right, always make the copy to disk first when copying to CD's.

I would add that you should go to the CD-RW software venders site and upgrade their software if you can (Roxio{ECDC} or Nero) because this often solves a lot of problems.

Sounds like she needs to kill PCHealth and TaskMonitor in Startup and maybe some of the other Start menu programs that get started to. The fact that she killed all the forground active task and it helped, indicate there may be a lot of stuff running that she is not aware of.

Do a good virus scan and then run ADAware_Lavasoft.nu if you have not done so. Cool off, try a few things suggested, read some of the other posts here on CD-RW problems and slow system problems and then tell us what you find.

If it's any consolation, after sales service here in England is just as crap! My CDRW/DVD replacement has still not arrived after 9 months.
I can't comment on deleting stuff in the registry as I know less than the dough-nut who messed with your PC.
What software versions do you have & what OS.
I have a small selection of software I have collected that works with my CDRW 24x 10x 40x
Win ME. If that is the problem you will be sorted. E-mail me.
