Yea so i wanted to get in real dos mode with my Windows ME. if you're not familiar with the process, io.sys, command.com, and regenv32.exe are all patched. and then autoexec.bat and config.sys are replaced with new files.
The problem is that I never backed up the autoexec.bat or config.sys files. so now my start up is really screwed.
the biggest problem is from zone alarm, which wont start because of a vsinit.dll problem and locks up my internet.
i'm found unpatched io.sys and command.com files, but the regenv32.exe is a hard file to find. if anyone else has windows me please help me and email that regenv32 to me.is there any way i could find out what should go back into the config.sys and autoexec.bat files?
currently, autoexec.bat has :
c:\windows\win.comand config.sys has
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
anyone can help?

Your best bet would probably be to look in the .cab archives on your Windows ME install disc. One of these might have the default files.
By the way, have you ever considered upgrading to a more recent operating system? Windows 2000 would run very well on your system. With a few tweaks, it would be inherently more stable and noticeably faster.
Email me if you need more info,
James

regenv32.exe is in the WIN_17.CAB
[autoexec.bat]
SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
SET windir=C:\WINDOWS
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMANDThat ^^, would be standard. But, things get added by programs. So, can't help anymore than that.
config.sys is blank.
What does it show at the 'Environment' (Tab) in your System Configuration Utility?
Is there autoexec.bak and config.bak at the root of your C:\? If so, might be able to use the contents of the autoexec.bak.
Hope that's useful. And be more careful when you decide to play next time :-)

"if you're not familiar with the process, io.sys, command.com, and regenv32.exe are all patched"
No, I'm not familiar with that.
I guess pressing F8 and starting in DOS would have been too simple.
You can unscrew io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com by booting on ME floppy and:
sys c:
[enter]You probably don't need ANY autoexec or config to run ME.
M2
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Thanks for your help.
I just tried copying some of the files out of some .cab files but that casue the computer to get stuck at dostelling me to restart.
windows me doesn't alloow yo ugto get to dos by pressing f8 at startup
I'm going to upgrade to windows 2000 by the end of the week I'm going to get help with the install but I still might take you up on the offer for more help James.
