problem with WinDVD and DirectX 8.1

I have problems now after installing DirectX 8.1 and WinDVD4.0 . I was running FreeDVD (because the WinDVD that came with the laptop, running on ME, didn't work) and now after installing DirectX 8.1 and trying WinDVD4.0, I have only the sound and a black screen when I use FreeDVD. Does anyone know what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
