I just signed up for a high speed Internet service. After installing the new cable modem and the Comcast software, I am receiving errors about loadqm, ccapp, and an "unknown error" each time I try to use Internet Explorer. When I click "close" on the error Intenet Explorer closes. So, I have cable access, but I can't use a browser to get online.

Prior to this, I was using a dial up connection and having no problems.

I have been reading that ccapp is part of Norton products and I run Norton Anti-virus software. Would this affect Internet Explorer?

Please help! Thank you.

Loadqm is part of MSN messenger, and does not need to be running.

Have you tried another browser to see if the problem is just with IE??

Netscape Browser won't run either, but I can't remember what the error message is.

I have unchecked Loadqm from startup in msconfig. I included the info about it in case it was pertinent to the problem/scenario.

Thanks.

Well, running and not connecting is one thing - not even being able to (successfully) launch IE or Netscape is something else again.

Without knowing the actual error messages, kind of difficult to advise

Cable should install no problem at all. You seem to be unlucky.

Suggest you check the following:-

Start/Settings/Control Panel

Select "Internet Options"

Connections :- Never Dial a Connection
Lan Settings:- Automatically Detect Settings
Programs:- Just check correct for your email client etc
Advanced:- I would suggest "Reset defaults" for now.

Back to "Control Panel" and select "Mail"

Is your email address set to "Default"? If not, make it so.

Select it and then "Properties"

Select "Servers"

Incoming mail server is:- "POP3"
Incoming mail[POP3] to "pop.(your service) like mine is set to pop.ntlworld.com)
Outgoing mail [smtp] to "smtp.(your service - see above)"
Account name:- use the dot i.e. mine is set to stuart.mundye
Password - whatever you like (set "remember" if you are on a private PC)

Select "Connection"

Select "Connect using my Local Area Network"
Clear the rest.

Ignore "Advanced" for now. It should be set automatically for you.

Let us know how you get on with that.

Regards

Stuart

Creepy, the problem is being unable to successfully launch IE. The error says, "An unknown error has occurred in <unknown> ..."

Clicking the CLOSE button on the error message causes IE to close.

Stuart, thanks for your advice. I will have to check those things when I get back home tonight. (I'm using Internet from work.)

I think I have narrowed down the issue to being a problem with the cable modem installation. Fortunately, before I started making any changes, I remembered to create a restore point which I've had to go back to many times now. Step by step this morning I made changes and then checked IE. The IE error did not occur until after I rebooted after adding new hardware steps for the new cable modem.

That is, I added the new driver and a file related to using USB port (I'm not sure if this wizard does any other steps.) and when it said I needed to restart my computer I told it not to. I check IE and it was fine. I got online for a few minutes. Then, just to troubleshoot, I rebooted which I will have to do eventually :), and when it came back up IE gave the error.

Does anyone know what gets applied during the reboot?

Thanks for all your responses!

Kathy

Hmm, perceptions do vary - I may in fact be 'creepy', but that is not actually my username here.

Whether or not you have a functioning ISP should not stop you from running IE or Netscape, period - yes, I realize IE generated an 'unknown error' - you made casual mention of a (forgotten) Netscape error message - who knows? Might've been helpful
