I was updating the patch on IE6. I got an
error but I didn't have time to read it
before my computer shut down. Now I can't
get my laptop to get past the desktop wallpaper. I've tried boot disks from a couple of sites and those don't help.

I can get to Safe Mode but that also just
shows me the desktop wallpaper. If I also
try to view the bootlog.txt I just get taken
to the desktop wallpaper. My desktop also
has Windows ME installed. But its just the
laptop I'm having trouble with.

I'm very frustrated. Would appreciate any
help!

Hello Rav4,

The Internet Explorer 6 upgrade is buggy to download and install. 1. Try pressing the control key on boot-up to access safe mode. Then go to start and press run. In the box type msconfig and okay. Your configuration utility will open. Click the start-up tab. Look inside and scroll down this box. Look at the entries with check marks. If you see a entry to Internet Explorer or IE6, then uncheck the checkmark next to it. Click the apply button and okay. Reboot your machine. Hopefully this will work. If not, go to step 2. 2.You should put a start-up floppy disk in your drive and reboot. At the menu, select minimal boot. Then at the A prompt, type scanreg. Follow the directions to scan your registry for errors. Then select the view backups of your registry. If you see a date (cab) that was before the day you installed the upgrade or even the same day, but select the day before if possible. Then select it and let the computer update your registry to that time. To restart your computer press the control, alt, and delete keys together. If you need the files that should be placed on the start-up disk, I can send them to you. Just copy all the files to a floppy. My fingers are very tired.

I got a copy of the boot disk off my
other computer. But it doesn't load when I
have it in the laptop. I just see the desktop
and thats it, no icons not even the start button so I can't get to anything. I looked
at the other link that was provided and none
of that would help me because I'm stuck on the desktop wallpaper. I've even tried safe
mode.

You have to put the disk into your floppy and start the computer. It should post and take you to a menu with 3 choices to choose from.

Thats the thing, I've tried 3 different
resources for the boot disk. I have the floppy in the laptop when I start it and
I don't get the options, not even if I go
straight to safe mode.

How do you get into the bios of your laptop?
If you can then check your bootsequence and enable boot from floppy. It sounds like your system is set to boot only from HD and in that case any floppy you try will fail.
Once you can boot from floppy then try the scanreg thing from response 4. I know nothing about that side of it.

I'm sure I can find out how to get to the
bios setup and change the sequence. In the
meantime I have ordered a recovery disk
from HP. I hope that helps. *crosses fingers*
