The keyboard on my daughter's Compac Presario
1200 laptop with Windows Me barely works.
She bought it in January 01. She did not use
it much. One day when she turned it on, 95%
of the keys didn't work. She has McAfee
installed and I would like to connect it to
Housecall or something similar but without
the keyboard working, I couldn't type in the
address, etc. Another daughter has a desktop
Compaq with a keyboard, would that plug into
the laptop (would it need a driver installed).
I don't know if this is a hardware, software or
virus problem. Folks at Compaq told my daughter
to send it in (not under warranty). Any
suggestions? Is it possible for me to download
a Mcafee update (she has 4.0.50) onto a floppy
disk on another computer and then install it to
hers? I can use the TouchPad and left TouchPad
button. Thanks for any suggestions!!!

I've pluged a keybd into mine ok.
It worked, best try it. Do the scan. Then get back if any problems.
Jim

Connecting an "external" keyboard did work. When I went to Housecall, no virus was found. In general, an error message has been coming up when the laptop boots up: "Vsmain has caused an error in VSU150.DLL. Vsmain will now close." I noticed that the door to her battery was slightly ajar, so I put it back on. Either I or something previous slightly broke what the door slides onto. Then I noticed that beside the battery door, the PC card eject button was missing. My daughter was unaware of the laptop ever falling. Any suggestions? Thanks for the previous ideas. It's nice to know that at least she could attach a keyboard to her laptop to get it to work (although I doubt that this would be her preference.)

Sarah.
After a long search I have found something but one thing that was mentioned over again was the Trojan infection of that Vsmain file. It may pay you to get Adwear from lavasoft.com and run it to see if that helps, also check in control panel for your keybd settings, you probably have already, click on and off boxes then apply, in case the settings are not taking.
Found something about the DLL but writen in Japanese , not good at that!
Try that and see....get back if you have no joy......JimHere is a bit about McAfee I found , also may help.
If McAfee VirusScan Central is run while VShield
is not loaded, some users may experience a crash
in VSMAIN.exe. Note that this issue is known to
occur on Windows 2000 and Windows NT systems.
Windows NT 4.0 users may experience a crash in
VSMAIN.exe while scanning.

Also a bit more Keybd advice further up the list at:-
