I keep hearing about this term "ping".
What is it, and why would you ping someone or another computer? Is it to check the quality of the internet connection and modem?
TIA : )

Ping.exe is a small program used in troubleshooting internet and network connectivity.

Basically, what you are doing by running ping is tapping the shoulder of a specific server on the internet and saying, "Do you see me?"

The server replies if it does.

The reason I ask people to ping both an IP address and an FQDN (fully qualified domain name) is becuase I am also testing your machine's abiltiy to resolve names. The internet only sees numbers. All communication is done by IP and other numbers. The server you are connecting to and your machine must intrepret those numbers into friendly names.
