My system:
Windows ME
1 GHz AMD Athlon
256 MB RAM
16 MB Nvidia TNT2
80 Gig's of HD (2)When I run PhotoShop 6.01 and try to pull up the "Layers Style" palate, it runs extremely slow, and that is the only place it drags. I tried the "Preferences" and lowered my dedicated memory to 30% and nothing, then 50% and nothing.
I have Norton AntiVirus 2000 and put an exclusion on the files and still nothing.
I also turned off the Graphics Accelerator but still nada.
Any other thoughts? I don't have this prob with my puter at home which isn't nearly as powerful as this one.
Thanks

If you are working with large graphic files and don't have a scratch disk for photoshop then that "could" be your problem.

I allocated my entire second hard drive (40 MB back up drive) as the scratch disk. Doesn't seem to matter with the size of the graphic files. Often I start from scratch and create without photos and size is less than 1 MB.

when it is slow can you hear your hard drive churning?...can you compare the speed with some other computer ME or 98 just to see if it not the "normal speed"?
try to turn off completely your anti virus program (you can use it on demand when you really need it.. otherwise it is a big performance drag)... also shut down everything using ctrlaltdel except systemtray, and ecxplorer and the appliction name for the photoshop.... try that if the speed changes... i am not familiar with the 6.1 check if the box does say "windows ME".... also you can try the help center http://www.adobe.com
also adove photoshop 3 and 4 have some serious issues with windows ME

Thanks for the ideas. My problem seems to be with just that one palate which is new in the 6.0 version. I don't hear the drive churning. Tried running w/o virus detection and still no dice. This is the only thing that runs slow at all on my system and I have a lot of memory hog programs as I'm a web designer. Again, I don't have this problem at home, but home is still on Win 98, not ME. I'm curious if it's an ME issue. I tried everything that the help center at adobe suggested, and that's why I thought I'd come here since you guys are usually right on.
Keep the troubleshooting coming!!! =) Thanks.

are you on network at work?...i have to disconnect from network if i want to acomplish something on my computer at work...
Regards Miro

Maybe... maybe not. Symantic states on their website that Norton antivirus 2000 is not compatible with WinME and I have seen it cause many, many stability issues.... but, when ME first came out, the OEM companies were still installing a "modified" version of the product that was supposed to work with ME. Notice the "supposed"... seen problems with it too.
My suggestion here is to try turning off the startup group. This will both disable Norton and ensure that nothing is interfering with Photoshop. To do this:
Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
Choose selective startup.
Take the checkmark out of Load Startup Group Items.
When you turn off the startup group you disable the Adobe Gamma Loader. You may want to insure that starts upon boot by rechecking it under the startup tab.
Click apply>>ok>>and reboot when prompted.Depending upon how the network is set up... you may loose network connectivity, but this is just for testing anyway. Try Photoshop now.
Any lag?
If there is... post back and let us know. Maybe something else is going on.
If there isn't you will have to do some testing from msconfig>>startup tab to figure out which application is causing your problem. I'm betting on the Norton... but I don't know enough about what you're running to guess.
If, in addition to Norton Antivirus 2000, you are running the rest of the System Works Suite... do a search on this drive for: OEM*.inf... You should have a couple of them, but not like 30,000 of these files. If you do, post back and I will find you some removal instructions.
Have you noticed any other lagging issues? And... when did this start?

Thanks for the tips. It's Sunday right now so I'll try these tomorrow morning at work. As far as I can tell, this is the only lag issue. PhotoShop runs smooth on all counts until I use this particular palate of options. I'll type up a review of what happened when I try these suggestions...
