AMD is cheaper and faster when calculating mathematical stuff, like CAD, Intel is much more expensive, but sometimes exceeds in 3D intensive environments (like playing Quake). Overall, their performance is relatively the same, thus, many choose AMD.

I was told with the AMD you get more bang for your buck. I have read about some overheating problems with the AMD's ! If you decide to go with AMD , make sure your case has a good cooling system. Take Care,Nick
