I have a laptop that runs off a 100mhz bus and I want to buy a 256mb stick for it on Ebay but the seller doesn't say whether it's PC100 or PC133 and the auction ends early in the morning, don't have the chance to question him. I know that sometimes PC133 is backwards compat. with PC100 but is it always?

PC133 will work fine, just runs at slower speed of the bus.

thekid is right about Brant being right . They do have backward compatablity . In other words you can use a 133 in 100 slot and it will work fine . You should put the newer 133 stick in slot 1 ! LOL ,Nick

In my experience the 133 has always worked as 100.
The system just reads it at the slower speed. Ive even mixed and matched it and got it to work.

A while back i remember a guy who posted for about a month here, cant remember his screen name. One of his posts went into some technical jargon explaining why it doesnt work sometimes. The guy claimed to be an expert and from his post i believed it but who knows.

If you call up the laptops tech support line they will say it wont work. If you asked me on the street id say go for it. The only thing you can do is give it a shot. I assume its at a good price so if it doesnt work take a snapshot and resell it :).

I just stumbled on this Ebay auction description:

NEW! Viking Universal 256MB PC133MHz, 32X64, NON-ECC, CL3, SERIAL# 98378756 SODIMM For Laptops. It will fit in 99% of the laptops that use PC133 memory. It will not work if you need PC100....

I think my bid just went down ;)

Hopefully this will be the last post on this, Brant is ABSOLUTELY correct.
And only is PC133 backwards compatible, but it WILL work next to a PC100.
What will NOT work, is PC100 when your bus speed is 133.
Cheers :)

Well, I got the module off Ebay for $41, a new PNY, so if it doesn't work I should be able to get my money back (and maybe then some) anyway. Thanks to all who replied.
