My sister's computer was working just fine but all of a sudden it started to do some file transfers on it's own. She does not know what type of files were being transfered. She tried to shut it down and it would not. This lasted for 3 days. Finally it shut down all by itself and now it does not want to turn on. She is running winME OS. Could this be that the motherboard fried or could it have been the power supply? I would like to thank you in advance for any help that you could provide. This PC is a HP pavilion 7840 only about 14 months old. Too bad that the warranty ran out.

what do you mean by it won't turn on? You mean you hit the on button and nothing happens? Start with making sure the unit is plugged in and the power supply, if it has a on/off switch, is turned on. Could be you just need a new power supply. What you describe does not sound like a motherboard failure.

I push the on button and nothing happens, no fans, lights, or anything. I checked all connections to the motherboard and all devices. I also checked to see if the processor was correctly in place.

joe,

First, by all connections. Did you also check the wires for the Power Button.

Second, A question if I may. Is this computer and/or monitor plugged into a surge interrupter? If so, try plugging it directly into the house outlets. Just a thought.

Third, does your power supply have a reset button?(breaker) Most likely not.

Joe, a simple fix for problems like this might be to pull the cmos jumper and reset the bios. Turn off and unplug the pc, open the case and ground yourself, and pull the jumper - probably the closest one to the cmos battery. Wait a few seconds, put the jumper back on, and try to start the PC.
