you need to get the shutdown update from MS Windows Update. Windows 98 had similiar problems with this and it didn't give an error message either. If i'm correct with my diagnoses you shut down it leaves windows and goes to a blank black screen with the DOS cursor line at the top left corner with no C prompt, right and won't shut off?

Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter

There is no 'shutdown update' for WinME that I''m aware of - that was an issue specific to Win98

Quote from the link jboy gave:

"Shutdown problems in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition can be caused by many factors..."

Yes, it does go for ME, as well as 98 and 95.

ATTENION AMERICA!!! LET'S WAKE UP AND TURN BACK TO GOD!

Just like real sentences (but with less information)

Yes - there are a couple of patches that can be applied in WinME - just not the (infamous) Win98 one, which was quite specific.

I'm not so sure that those constitute 'updates', but, if so, forgive my imprecision

As you no doubt have read, updating *device drivers* "... is probably the single most common solution to the Win ME shutdown problem."

At any rate, plenty of things to try in order to resolve the issue

i had a problem along those lines, albiet with windows 98se instead of ME, and it turned out to be, of all things, my power supply. certainly try what jboy has said first though, as it is more likely.

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours.

I have had problems with both Windows 98 and Windows ME shutdown problems. I have fixed this problem many times but it always seems to re-appear again later. I have one work around/fix that always works. Log of the computer and then use Ctrl+Alt+Delete. When the Task window pops up I select the Shut Down option. Windows shuts down every time!
