Comment:

i just installed a second hard drive in my tower, changed the jumpers to primary master and primary slave, partitioned the new drive, formatted the new drive and it all went well except it changed the new hard drive to (d) which used to be my cd-rom and now it doesn't recognize my cd-rom when i start my pc. I've tryed adding new hardware from my control panel and it still doesn't see it and my device driver is still installed and says it's working fine can anyone help me?

I'm not sure if how our problems are similar, but here goes. I had same problem i.e. computer not recognising my CDRom either.

What did I do? Reinstall Win Me again. That solved it. But a buddy of mine went to misconfig to try to ascertain the problem. In the end, he did what I did - reinstall again. Hope this is of some help.

Does your BIOS detect the CDROM? If it is, make sure there is no LASTIDRIVE=D in your config.sys file.

Not config.sys on Windows ME. Config.sys is blank... but I would definately check the Lastdrive entry in the registry. I can't remember where it is right now... but you can search the registry for it. I do know it's in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

To do this:
Go to start>>run>>regedit.
Highlight the folder marked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE by clicking on it once.
At the top click on Edit>>find.
Type in Lastdrive.
Click find now.

If you are in the right folder you will see on the right hand side both an entry for Lastdrive and MemphisLastdrive. Make sure they are set to Z.

move the second harddrive to secondary ide and put the cd-rom back as primary slave.
or you can change the cd-rom to secondary master.

Here's the path in the registry editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Look on the right for Lastdrive and MemphisLastDrive.

Try uninstalling the cd-rom, re boot and the add hardware should detect a new hardware device and assign it a new drive letter.

I had this problem once, and this trick worked.
Good luck,
Erin

I looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. and searched for last drive it showed me the MEMPHISLASTDRIVE and it says "Z" but there is no listing for LASTDRIVE i reinstalled ME today and it didn't work. I deleted the device from device mgr. and searched for a new one and that didn't work. I put the cd-rom back to primary slave and it shows up in MY COMPUTER fine. it works in DOS mode OK. the secondary IDE channel refuses to recognize it . the device mgr. sees it as E drive and the CMOS sees it and system information says its there under E just my computer won't see it? where is my sledge hammer.

My Windows 2000 Pro PC does not recognize my Plextor CD-RW and my Mitsumi CD-Rom drive. Both of them are IDE daisy chained together. The CD-RW is the master and the CD-Rom is the slave. I don't see their icons on the My Computer.

I only have one hardrive partitioned into two (C and D).

Any suggestions?

Thanks and I really appreciate any help.

Dan
