OS: WinME(all patches)
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon 1.2 Mhz/256 Mb
Product: systemax
Comment:

Each time I double click any icon on the desktop my PC freezes up.Problem started when I did a sys. restore after which I reloaded(from cd)the files needed for dsl service.IE took forever to bring websites up as compared to before sys. res.Tried with firefox slightly better but still very slow.Ran AVG and AdAware.Both found different redlisted/critical items which I deleted.Used SMUOD's guide for ME.All with no improvement.Ran Avast which found a trojan.Deleted that.Ran it again now no trojan.No improvement.Icons do not open when double clicked not even from start menu.Spent 2hours on the phone with the dsl people.Still no improvement.Any and all help will be appreciated.

Sounds like your system is a mess.

Can you even get updates for AVG anymore? I know version 8.0 was released recently & it no longer supports 9x/ME. AVAST! will slow your system down. There aren't many free anti-v choices left for Win9x/ME systems...possibly Bit Defender or ClamWin. And if you suspect a Trojan, you should use a Trojan Remover. Always disable System Restore before virus removal...many times they hide in the systemm restore files.

http://www.simplysup.com/

Do you use CCleaner? If not, get it & run it regularly...both the cleaner & the registry scan. Also, have you run MSCONFIG to see what garbage is loading at startup?

http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msc...

Personally, I have no faith in WinME's System Restore & always recommend disabling it. I didn't know SMUOD had a guide...I usually recommend Trev's guide (with the exception of System Restore):

http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtw...

What files do you need to install for DSL service?

Updates for AVG are still coming, got one today.Will try the other antivirus programs once PC is in good shape.

Installed and ran Trojan remover6.6.9.Got a message saying 'an executable file *has not* been found in this path C:\windows\winstart.bat"

Installed and analyzed PC with Ccleaner. Found 45.8MB of "stuff". Which I should delete???

Already thinned out startup menu before I posted.Also used the guide on

http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtw...

which I believed belonged to SMUOD(thanks for the correction).

ATT DSL sends a cd with software on it needed to use their DSL service on winME. Don't know exactly what the software is. You have the option to download said files but cd was more convenient for me.

Take a look at winstart.bat. Applications rarely load from there. You should be able to look at it and disable it if necessary from MSCONFIG.

You could also download and run hijackthis to check on what's running.

I believe it says something like, "do not post hijackthis log unless asked" & includes a link to a site where your log can be analyzed. Try the link 1st....

The analyzer may recommend removing some legitimate, though unneeded, stuff like toolbars. Don't automatically do everything it says.

@jam
That's exactly what the warning said.How do I get back to the analyzer.Didn't use the link when warning popped up.

PC is now running better but not as well as I remember.Still freezing/Sticking but not as bad.Ctrl,Alt,Del ;end task Explorer gets it going again as compared to Reset.

Also freeze/stick on shutdown,which may be new or not noticed prior.Moving cursor around with mouse gets that one going/working.

@DAVEINCAPS
Trojan remover 6.6.9 now shows no malicious activity.The view log shows a lot of these errors;

Unhandled Exception calling SystemTimeToDateTime in procedure FileTimeToDTime

Any suggestions??
Thanks

Now using
AVG(scheduled for daily run and update)
Avast(manual run)
Trojan remover(auto)

I don't know what that error means. I guess go ahead and post the log here and we'll take a look at it.

They kind of frown on posting them since they're prettty long and often get reposted over and over as changes are made. But a quick look wouldn't hurt.

This is the log.

I'm not too concerned with one or two errors but I think this is a lot.

I don't see any obvious problems but if you haven't used the analyzer yet, then by all means do it now.

I don't know what's up with the 'unhandled exception' errors. Do you ever get them in the normal course of PC operation or are they just showing up in the hijackthis log? The fact they're showing up in line after line indicates maybe something is caught in a loop and going nowhere. That could be causing the freezing problem.

Googling that exact error doesn't return anything. But you might try googling just "unhandled exception" and see if anything applies to what you're experiencing.

@jam
Thanks for the link.Hijackthis analyzer showed one item rated nasty(3 red squares).

O12 - Plugin for .spop: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Plugins\NPDocBox.dll

that's the item.

@DAVEINCAPS
Above log is from trojan remover.I do not get those error messages during normal operation of PC.I have had 3 blue screens with OE error messages which is about par for me in a week.

Will delete the nasty rated item and see how she runs.Googled "unhandled exception" then narrowed the results with "windowsME" got about 36k hits.I guess my weekend is pretty much planned out.

Not really a problem but can you remove/delete OE completely without affecting the rest of the system?? I don't ever use it.

That looked like a weird hijackthis log but I figured maybe it was a newer version.

With OE, if you mean 'outlook express' then if it shows in add/remove programs it should be safe to remove.

Fatal exception 0E (zero E) errors are something different and usually hard to track down. With those, googling the location the error message gives can sometimes help.
