Hello!

I posted a question concerning WinME and Partition Magic 7 and resultant error messages when trying to partition a drive with ME already installed. It was awhile back, and I got a few responses, so I'll re-post my question here along with the replies. My question is, I and another gentleman are still having issues resolving this dilemma with PM7, and I have not had version 6.0 ever installed so that does'nt apply to this error message. At any rate, I was hoping there would possibly be some more information out there as to solving this problem. Any help greatly appreciated. Here's the original post and the replies so far. Thanks for any help in advance.

I cannot get Partition Magic to perform anything on either my laptop or desktop, both loaded with WinME. Everytime I try to create a new partition, or anything for that matter, I consistently get an error message, error #192, stating that the "support files for WinME are missing, re-install from the Partition Magic 6.0 CD to fix problem". But, I don't have PM 6.0, just 7.0, and when I try to re-install all files from the 7.0 disc it does no good at all, I just still keep getting the same error message when the program tries to do it's thing. Symantec conveniently does not provide support for this version any longer. I bought this program full version 2 years ago and just have now started to want to use it to create a dual boot with Win2K Pro. Is it now wasted money? I can't find anything on Google or elseswhere that even pertains to this particular message. I find Symantec's support abysmal. Help would be much appreciated.

I used Partition Magic and it worked great.
I often don't read the help files but with the version I had (don't remember which) I booted off of the disc and set 3 partitions and formatted while in DOS. I didn't have to install anything and therefore the OS didn't matter a fig.
I now have dual boot Win ME, XP & a spare partition to store stuff in case I have to re-install Windows at any time.
To boot off of the disc you will have to go into Cmos and set your CD drive as first boot (unless it's set that way already).

David M., SWAG,(may be all wet) sounds to me like you are dealing with two different versions here and the proggie can tell the difference. If that's the deal, V6.0 needs to be uninstalled and V7.0 installed in it's place.
In order to see if that's the deal and still keep things so you can revert back if needed, see if you can rename V6.0 to something else and install V7.0. If it then works you can delete the renamed file, or if not, it's easily reversed.

I would Uninstall both Versions, but make the Partition Magic Boot Disk first, then Uninstall them, and do all your Partitioning from DOS using the PM Boot disks. Make sure to Run Defrag and Scan Disc before Shrinking a partition to create more partitons. Also if the Hard drive is large enough do as Post#1 advised. Then install W2K Pro from within Windows Me and chose new installation and direct the installation to your newly created Partition. It will create a boot menu to chose Me or W2K.

Did you ever find out about this issue? I also have the same on my system. I have never had PartitionMagic 6.0, although error #192 requires the 6.0 CD to install the files that are missing to support Windows ME. All I am trying to do is re-size my C:\ drive from 3GIG to 5Gig on a 20Gig drive taking the required space from the D:\ partition which has plenty of space on it. This worked on WIN98Se but I updated from that to Win ME and noe PM dosen't work. I did uninstall and remove all traces of the program on the disk and registry and then re-installed the program. Made the boot disks asked for and tried to boot from those and got other errors I am in the process of tracking down. Just curious if you found the answer.
Thanks,
dQQm

As a side note, I don't understand why "Ed in Texas" calls me a SWAG. I assure anyone interested, my copy of PM7 is perfectly legit, store bought with serial number. If I'm mistaken as to Ed's reference to that then apologies in advance, and if I'm not, I suggest Ed asks first before he decides to accuse peeps of using ripped software.
Thanks.

.. you could have just posted a link to your original question (or its number)

FYI - SWAG is hardly an insulting term - it stands for various types of Wild Assed Guesses

Could've Googled it before going out on a limb y'know

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

lol SWAG also stands for , and it also could mean promotion of merchandise or services. The definition that I referred to was "scripter wear and gear". ;-)

Besides, his wild ass guess was wrong.

But you're right, I think I'll be better off googling somewhere else to ask this ? since second time around noone here seems to have a clue.

Well, for those of you perusing this site and have been wanting the answer to the original question I posted here, instead of wild ass guesses and smart ass replies, here it is....I will copy and paste the original instructions here, and here is the URL you need to download the required file from Symantec;
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:QjILaT2TkGYJ:www.symantec.com/techsupp/primus/id2714.html+partition+magic+winme+%22error+192%22&hl=en

Solution: Error 192 "Files necessary to support Windows Me have not been installed. Re-installing from the PartitionMagic 6.0 CD will correct this problem."

The simplest way to eliminate this error is to upgrade to PartitionMagic 8.0. Alternately, you can try the following:

PartitionMagic 6.0

Uninstall and then reinstall PartitionMagic.

PartitionMagic 7.01 on a Windows Me machine
------------

1. Go to ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities.

2. Download the file "vfd folders.exe."

3. Double-click the "vfd folders.exe" file.

4. If you installed PartitionMagic to a different location than the default (C:\Program Files\PowerQuest\PartitionMagic 7.0), enter the correct location in the "Unzip to folder" field, making sure to point to the "Win9x" folder within the "PartitionMagic 7.0" folder.

5. Click "Unzip."

Files are extracted to the PartitionMagic 7.0 folder. The next time you run PartitionMagic, Error 192 should no longer be reported.

If you performed a custom installation of PartitionMagic 7.01, or if multiple versions of PartitionMagic are installed on your machine and the preceding steps do not resolve the issue, please do the following:

1. In the "vfdsetup" directory that was created when you unzipped the "vfd folders.exe" file, there is a file called "Magic.bat." Open this file with Notepad.

The contents of the "Magic.bat" file should look similar to the following:

ECHO OFF

SET ErrorLevel=0

REM Create virtual image, set to 2.88 MB floppy image and write MBR
Erase -u C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\PQVF.VFD
NewImage -8 -s C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\PQVF.VFD

REM Mount Virtual Image
Mount C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\PQVF.VFD

REM Copy IO.SYS
Dup -v C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{1E500~1\IO.SYS \\.\vf0

REM Copy MSDOS.SYS
Dup -v C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{1E500~1\MSDOS.SYS \\.\vf0

REM Copy COMMAND.COM
Dup -v C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{1E500~1\COMMAND.COM \\.\vf0

REM Copy AUTOEXEC.BAT
Dup -v C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFDSETUP\AUTOEXEC.BAT \\.\vf0

REM Copy CONFIG.SYS
Dup -v C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFDSETUP\CONFIG.SYS \\.\vf0

REM Copy HIMEM.SYS
Dup -v C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS \\.\vf0

REM Copy PMAGICBT.exe
Dup -v C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\PMAGICBT.exe \\.\vf0

REM Copy MOUSE.*
Dup -v C:\Program Files\PowerQuest\PartitionMagic 7.0\MOUSE.* \\.\vf0

REM Copy VFRSTMBR.COM
Dup -v C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{1E500~1\VFRSTMBR.COM \\.\vf0

REM Copy RESTRMBR.exe
Dup -v C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\RESTRMBR.exe \\.\vf0

EXIT

2. Edit the paths that point to PartitionMagic so that they point to the correct location of the product.

There are eight different references to the PartitionMagic directory in the "Magic.bat" file. The paths are in the 8.3 format. For example, Progra~1 is the 8.3 format for the Program Files directory.

If the product was installed on the D:\ partition in a directory named "PowerQuest," you would need to change this:

Erase -u C:\PROGRA~1\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\PQVF.VFD

to this:

Erase -u D:\POWERQ~1\PARTIT~3.0\WIN9X\VFD\PQVF.VFD.

Correct all eight references to the PowerQuest directory. Once the changes are complete, save the file. You should then be able to run the product in Windows .
without receiving the error.

If the error persists after you have applied the recommended fixes, please send the following information to PowerQuest Technical Support:

- Include a Debug report (see http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/primus/id444.cfm)
- A PARTINFO report created by you. (For information on using PARTINFO, see PowerQuest Solution http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/primus/id62.cfm, "Running a PartitionInfo.")
- The information outlined in PowerQuest Solution (see http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/primus/id102.cfm), "Information Needed for a Trouble Report."
- If you are running under Windows ME, the VFNSTDBG.TXT file located in C:\Program Files\PowerQuest\PartitionMagic 6.0\Win9X\VFD.
- A copy of the contents of the Master Boot Record captured with WRPROG.exe. (For information on using WRPROG, see PowerQuest Solution "Instructions for Using the WRPROG.exe Utility." "Instructions for Using the WRPROG.exe Utility.")
..

One thing I'll give this site though.....it gave me the incentive to do the detective work myself, to the point of finding the answer myself, due to the imbeciles who populate it here. Thanks for nothing!
