i have a 30gig HD, and have win ME on it. I have done nothing to the hard drive(partition wise), and i was wondering if someone could tell me how to get win ME with all my current installed programs in one partition, and in a new partition, have just win XP(newly installed and no 3rd party software). I need to know what programs to get(to do this:bootmanger, partition prog...etc.), what i need to know about doing this, and step by step(not to detailed, but understandable)how to do this. I have never partition, or did anything like it. I do know alot about computers, and need to know how to do this. I would like it very much if someone could help me out on this. I have read other threads, and not found out everything i need to know. Thanks

Just install windows ME on the first partition and install Windows XP on the second partition. Windows XP comes with a boot manager so there is no need for extra software. When you tell XP to install itself on the second partiton, it will automatically install the boot manager for you. (Just install Windows ME first on the first partition).

i need to also know how to do the partition, like how to make the "two" partition's. Also will it ask me what OS i want to load at bootup? what will it look like after i do all this? will there be two separte drives in my computer? will i be able to share files between partitions? Will i have to delete all of the stuff i have on here now? Would i just make a partition out of unused section of my hard drive and not interfear with the first one. would it slow my computer down?

Have you been to http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

It has lots on info. If you partition your hard drive then you are going to lose the data on the hard drive, so backup first. This is only if you change the existing partition. If you just add a new partition to use the remaining space then it will not interfere with the other partitions. Both operating systems can see each other's partitions if you format the XP partition as FAT32.

You need a program like Partition Magic if you want to make a new partition without losing your current data.

I got the Partition Magic, but im waiting on the win xp CD to get here.(shoud be today). And i was wondering, what kind of partition sould i set up the new one as, FAT32? or something else. And does it matter if the two OS see each other, what will they do? And how would i make them to where they wouldn't, or can i do that?

It sounds like you not familiar with the computer basics. I suggest that you study a basic manual or howto so that you can understand what you are about to do (you could get into deep trouble). The Que books are some good resources.

The computer needs to see each OS somehow as the C-drive is the default boot drive. You will have to install a boot manager or batch file to set the different OS environs so that they don't trample each other.

It is much to difficult and lengthy for this forum. You need to read and understand. Try searching google for on-line articles. Try multi-boot or boot managers for a start. The MS Knowledge base is another source.

well i hate to say, even though it does sound like i know nothing, but i do know alot software wise(windows), but i have never done anything partition wise, and never had two OS installed, so thats why i want to know what to do. I think if i add another partition, install Win XP, it might work. But i don't know about the two OS seeing each other, and everything about the bootup stuff. If you know of a good place that tells this, through it at me.

I didn't mean to infer that you know nothing, that is not the case. I just was speaking of the boot setup, function of the partions and how the boot process works.

The file "setup.txt" on your ME CD disk will describe it alittle as far as the multi-boot options go. The partion-magic site at http://www.powerquest.com may offer some hints. Searching google for multi-boot and setup may show you something of interest.

I don't really know what you mean by the OS's seeing each other?? If your want to know if the files can be accessed, I am sure that they can as long as you have formated with the same filesystem (FAT32). The only thing is that some applications may need to be upgraded to run on ME and older programs may have to be reinstalled on the new system as some files (*.dlls) may need to be located in the current windows folder. This I see as a main drawback to multi-boot is the duplication of application setup in the two windows folders.

I normally use the multi-boot (sometimes called dual boot) to have available two different operating systems (i.e. Linux, beos, etc) to study or experiment with. For my working applications, I only use a single OS.

yeah i know, sorry, but i think i got most of it figured out, i hope. Well anyways heres what im going to do. Resize my partition i have now, and hopefully not lose data. Make a new partition, install xp. I do not know why im doing that, but ill prob change my mind like i have 200 times since yesterday. I just might get another OS, like win 98, maybe linux, and format hole HD, then put them on there.
