Yeah- it's on a WinME machine but I doubt it's necessarily a ME problem- I recently reinstalled my O/S and now find that Micro$oft Paint (plain old Paint- not Pro) won't open .jpg files. Is it only my imagination that I remember being able to open .jpg's with Paint? I remember not being able to SAVE bitmaps as jpegs unless I'd opened them from a jpeg. Am I missing something here?
Does this even make sense!? Or is this just some more brain flatulence? : )

MSPaint.. Pro? Never heard of a pro paint..
Anywho.. paint is a strange application. One thing ive noticed is that when you start installing other image editing applications or some scanner or camera software you all of a sudden get an option to save images as jpg's and gif's and your allowed to open any image. Currently i have 5 image editors installed and i can edit any image file in paint or save my project in any format. Ive also noticed that installing graphic editors can remove some of the normal functions and without paying attention to how things worked before i installed all the editors.....
Ok.. i admit i dont know the science behind this or if ive had too much to drink but i know of a sloppy work around for ya. Just open the image in windows explorer and hit the print screen key. Then open paint and right click the work area and choose paste. Now your image is in paint and you can edit it. You will only be able to save it as .bmp [i think].
Almost forgot.. Try right clicking the .jpg and see if theres an edit option.

ttym59 - did you mean paint shop pro?
That's a separate program, now a windows program. It's Paint Shop Pro by Jasc, which is a great graphics editor.

It is a bit fiddly and involves some registry editing, but you can restore JPEG and GIF in Paint.
Look at number 6 fix here...

Jacob- Copy and paste is one of the two ways I knew something was different with this install. (Right click and 'Open with' being the other) When I copy a jpeg, I don't get the option to paste when I right click in Paint.
SMUOD- Yeah- you were right- that WAS a sloppy workaround :-) But I already had a few of them of my own! I guess I'm getting lazy in my old age and simply wanted to be able to edit jpegs as directly as possible-AKA right click and I'm there!
Suzi- I'm very familiar with Paint Shop Pro- I have it and DO use it. But, for simple editting, I find good ol' Paint a little easier to play with. If you go back to my post, you might see that I was trying to make the distinction between the two. But thanks just the same. I AM curious why you called it a Windows program- it IS JASC software and not included on any version of windows I'VE seen...!
Krystyna- Hopefully you'll be the "big winner (?)" here- I haven't looked at it yet but nothing ever seems to beat chopping up the registry. Or maybe that's just the way it's always looked after I'm done with it...
Thanks to all for your responses!
