I would go with the AMD.

I think it really depends on the application. If gaming is your bag go with the Intel as traditionally they have superior performance. If its large(as in huge) number crunching/databases/spreadsheets then go with the AMD. Also of note is the Intel is more MS friendly as a rule. Jimi_l

These tests Put pentium 4's 2200mhz chip "slightly" above amd's 1.6 under WINDOWS XP. How is it possible for a 2.2 ghz chip to run just slightly better than a 1.6ghz chip?
From what ive read the problem is not being able to overclock a pentium very well, not that you dont have to.

I just bought a XP1600 and a 1GIG Athlon (non-palomino ie. xp) Love them both.
I do a lot more than the average person, such as 6 Mbit video capture, DVD ripping and burning, etc. The AMD processor is your be value, *BUT* don't skimp on the MOTHERBOARD!!! That is where you will pay a higher price if you don't buy a quality motherboard. ECS sucks. Buy ASUS or other quility board.

the ram - get a DDR XP board - much cheaper on ram - RDRAM is the reason for pentium seeming better
