Hi there, I just built myself a kickass machine and now got a lot of problem I never had before. The new machine is an Asus P4T-E MB, P4 1.7 Ghz, ATI Radeon 8500 , Maxtor D740X 60gig HDD. the MB does`nt have the WinME Logo is that a big deal. I have all the latest driver install, a clean windows install with the asus .inf driver, all of the WindowsUpdat.Did everything I have done a million time on my other machine but now I cant even play Starcraft without the machine completely freezing !!!!! and that is very frustrading. I`m I gonna have to upgrade to XP like I keep on reading everywhere about P4 ?????? or there is a little trick I`m not aware of ??? thanx a lot for every bit of info I can get. Martin

I don't think you have a problem with the P4 vs ME, however, I can't comprehend why anyone would build a system like that just to screw it up with ME. XP is definitely the better choice, but perhaps this is a RAM problem. I know there is an issue with using 512 MB RAM with ME, which I am sure to experience soon because I just ordered 512 MB. XP doesn't have the problem though, and I may just upgrade and do a clean install myself. Not familiar with Starcraft either, but I know my son has had regular freezes with Alien vs Predator and other games. You probably just have the same problem I have: ME sucks. Also there is a freeware that manages RAM called Cacheman, you can find at www.outertech.com

I wouldnt worry about the logo. Does everything run ok? thats the big picture. You can create a new logo.sys file and then go to msdos.sys and make sure logo=1. As far as the ram you can use however much you want. The error is a file allocation error not that windows cant use it you have to adjust some settings in the vcache section of your system.ini folder.Im running 1 gb of rd ram with the same mobo and have no trouble. True Xp is a more stable operating system but better? i dont know. I have both os's on two different machines. Dont forget microsoft was alerted to a security flaw that was recognized as the worst security flaw in any of the windows os's.My Me has no problems runs well and is stable. I hope this helps you out.

Windows ME will operate without error in a P4 box. Verify the CPU/graphics temp is normal. P4=Heat=Freeze ups. How much ram? You didnt include this. Some have issues with large amounts of ram. Read thru this MSKB and see if it applies Power supply? P4 rating?
Last but not least.... dont go overboard troubleshooting this error. You may just have a bad part.

Forgot to mention...... You have a system that can handle XP. Upgrading might be something to look into. If you do upgrade to XP say goodbye to the 30-40 seconds from pressing power to a functioning desktop. If you set up more than one user get ready to wait 2-3 minutes.

My previous comp was P3 500MHz,Voodoo3/2000 with Apollo Pro MoBo...I used to play SC for hours but got no freezes hapend on ME...Played the FF8(My Fav) on my old comp too for Hours, still no crashes... Now, my current comp is using P3 866MHz, Voodoo3/2000 wit Intel Destop 815 MoBo...played SC on that too...still no crashes on ME...Usually, my experience on crashes is that : 1) Bad cluter/lost cluster... 2) Didn`t update driver for Graphic Card... 3) Broken CPU fan or using fan that is not cooler enough for the CPU(Center Processing Unit/Processor)....
