Hi Everyone
I have 640Mb of RAM installed. After start up etc System Info tells me I normally have about 440mb free.
I inserted the additional stick about 2 years ago and have never had a problem until now...
I use Video editing software (Ulead VS8) and do all my capture and edit on a second HDD (80 Gb)
I have been able to use this software for a while to burn DVDS but now during the burn process I get a message telling me that I am "Out of memory". Nothing more, nothing less.
My video projects are small enough to fit to a 4.7Gb disk and I have plenty of space on the hard drive. (This is confirmed on the screen prior to burn)
I have done a search and found the references to this message occurring when you have large amounts of RAM etc etc.
Can anyone help explain why it should suddenly be happening now when I have had the additional RAM for 2 years and have been burning DVDs for about a month without this glitch?
I don't want to reset everything in msconfig If I can avoid it.
Many thanks for your time and help.
Tony

It is a file cache issue when you get above 512.
Do Start > Run > System.ini
Scroll to the [vcache] section and add the line
MaxFileCache=512000Save, exit and reboot
shows vchache size and physical memory size

Thanks WawaDave
After posting checked System Info while using video editing software.
This confirmed that I only had about 20mb of 640 free prior to burning the DVD!
Could this mean that in my case the out of memory message genuinly means out of memory?
Is this unusual for standard 80 minute video projects with 640Mb of RAM to start with?
Many thanks
Tony

In other words, if you have followed the "bad" advice of creating a fixed size swapfile, you could be running out of virtual memory trying to edit large files. The advice is to either let Windows manage you virtual memory (swapfile) or to at least NOT set a maximum size while setting a minimum size.
It is also possible you are running out of free disk space on the drive (normally C:) with the swapfile. You can try running the System Tools - Disk CleanUp utility and see if that helps. Keep in mind, that the DVD burning software may have to build a 4.7G temporary file as well as expand the Swap file. So you might have to have over 5GB of free space on the C: disk before starting the operation.
Windows ME is a virtual memory OS and should never run out of memory as long as there is free space on the disk drive, or you have restricted it use of disk space for virtual memory. It is also possible that this error could be cause by a System Resources problem and you need to remove a few startup programs (like MS Word, Works) from pre-loading during system startup.
