Comment: Regarding a Presario 5008us with Windows ME. This is my parents' computer. They do not want to change. Quick Restore disks do not work. Mouse and arrow keys do not work in BIOS set up. How can I tell if BIOS is corrupt? If Win ME is corrupt? Must we clear the CMOS? Can anyone help me save my elderly parents' sanity? I'm helping them by phone from another state. Thanks and cheers, Donna

Reply: (edit)DonnaE, my first thought is one of confusion. Problem exactly? Assume they still have something. Can they restore to an earlier date where things worked? Understand they can't navigate in BIOS, what about in regular Windows program? Elaborate please. HTH. Ed in Texas.

Reply: (edit)Hi Ed in Texas, Thank you. The only thing they can get on the computer is (1) the Compaq logo in red; (2) the message "operating system can't contact the drives" ; (3) operating system not found on any devices. They rec'd a quick restore (2 disks) from Compaq. It did nothing. Over the phone, we tried F10 at start up to try to get them to the BIOS screen. I finallly got them to a (BIOS?) screen with the main menu highlighted, which also read 'ignore changes and exit' and 'F1=Help'. Also got them to a screen that read left and right arrow = choose settings ... F10 = accept changes ... esc = cancel changes ... press any key to continue. They tried press any key and it brought them back to what I thought was the BIOS screen. Does any of that further illuminate the problem? I appreciate your time and input. -- Donna E
