I have a Dell Computer with a NEC CD ROM drive. On Booting first time, the Computer will actually see the Audio Disc in the CD ROM drive, but if you remove it and insert another CDROM, it spins and says that it can't find a CD. My Question is, is there something corrupt in the System itself or is the CD Drive just busted(i.e. laster misaligned)

Have you tried cleaning the cd? Also you might want to check the cables inside of the computer. Make sure they are plugged in all the way.

hello
you might want to look in the device manager.and see what it has on your cd rom drive.
you might want to check your systems statis allso.

Test the drive outside of windows by booting with a bootdisk and choosing With cd rom support.
Once you get to the a:\> prompt, read the text above. It will tell you what the drive letter of your cd rom drive is... most likely e:\.
Put a data cd in the drive.
Let it spin up.
Type:e:
dirHitting enter after each command.
You should get a (dir)ectory listing of what is on the cd.
Take out that cd and try another data cd (like a game or an install disk for Quicken or something like that... just not a music cd).
Type:
dir
once more and hit enter.
Are you getting a directory listing? Or are you getting a CDR101 error?
This will tell you if something is wrong with the drive or if something is going on in Windows.
Are the cd's you are trying to read original cd's from a manufacturer or burned cd's?

Well, the cables are Intact. It is actually a CD/DVD ROM drive. Under Computer->Properties->Devices->The NEC driver is NOT X'ed out. and it says it's okay. When I stick a CD in, it spins for a while, if I try to access it, it spins and then I here a series of 3 clicks like it can't find anything and then says Please Insert a Disc into Drive e:. I'm running under Windows ME.
I also have a QPS Que!Fire CDRW installed thru a Firewire card and it functions fine.
