Subject: opening of .chm files
OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 / 128 MB SDRAM
Comment:
the 'Compiled HTML Help File' with the extension .CHM has stopped opening on my computer. it opens neither from within a program nor by double-clicking the .CHM file icon. the mouse pointer takes on the shape of an arrow and an hourglass figure and nothing happens after that. i then have restart my computer using CTRL+ALT+DEL.

however, the .chm files do open in the Safe Mode. i have checked the registration of file-types. the extension .chm does exist in the list. then why are the .chm files not opening in the normal mode of Windows? there are no bad sectors on my hard disk. i have repaired Internet Explorer by going to Add/Remove in the control panel. i have even reinstalled the Windows OS. i have reinstalled the monitor and video card drivers. but, nothing seems to work. please tell me how this problem can be solved. has it something to do with the BIOS?

Can you open help from the start menu?

What have you recently installed?

What version of Internet Explorerdo you have? You might try repairing IE from add/remove programs in Control Panel.

THis happened to me today..

What you need to do is set the chm file to open with hh.exe (usually in the windows/winnt) directory.

Make sure you select it to always open a chm file..
