Hello ppl,
I know there are places where you can scan your computer for virusses or trojans online. Anyone can give me a link? And is it safe to do by the way?
Thanks in advance,
PORKY

I was suspecting a trojan but it didn't find anything and Norton AV didn't either.......so i guess there's no trojan lol.

There COULD be spyware tho.
Download Adaware from tucows.com and run that on your PC.

Hello Jimi_1,
Already did that, but no spyware detected. I don't use kaazaa, morpheus etc and don't install any free programs so i don't think i have any spyware on the comp. For some strange reason, My bowser freezes and i have to ctrl-alt-delete to close it. After that it won't load any pages. When i try to disconnect (I use 56K modem) it won't disconnect. When I doubleclick on the modem icon it the tray I can see it's still sending bytes. After a while either the comp crashes or reboots itsself(????) and then everything is ok again. It started yesterday and now it mostly happens when i'm at www.htmlforums.com. Any suggestions?

You're dead on. It sure sounds like you have something malicious installed.

Have you taken a really hard look at what's installed in add/remove programs, what's in start>>run>>msconfig>>startup tab, and what is running if you hit ctrl+alt+del? Do you see anything you cannot identify?

Do you have any extra toolbars installed? Like the google or yahoo toolbar for IE?

Try cleaning out your activex components and see if that doesn't clear up the problem. To do this... browse to c:\windows\downloaded program files. Delete everything in here. Close all instances of IE and explorer. Reboot and try the net again.

Newgrl,

I checked the following:

MSconfig>>startup tab: I can identify everything.

Add/Remove: Nothing unusual.

ActiveX objects: The only two are HouseCall control and Shockwave. (I'm not removing them lol)

I don't use any additional toolbars. Cleared cache and cookies. The comp works fine otherwise then the browser problem. I think i'm going to that site (htmlforums.com) to see what happens. Oh yes, I use BlackIce firewall, so if someone was hacking me it should detect something (hopefully)
If it happens again i'll be here again.

Thanks a lot for the help,

PORKY

Porky, Are you using a firewall? If not, go to www.zonelabs.com and download ZoneAlarm

porky,
just an inquiry to provide some details for further help.
what browser?
what isp?
isp software installed or not?
a list of items in msconfig startup?
changed/updated browsers or isp lately?
system type and specs?
there could be more than one thing going on here if indeed there is no virus.
this is pure speculation but it might a combination of browser updates(or lack thereof)/modem drivers (can cause hangs), or even pesky isp software.
as a side, i once had some msn software that had a mind of it's own, wanting to connect or not letting me dissconnect etc. it's gone now.
that's all i can offer.

Woops whoa,
Just got the blue screen of death for the very first time while online, loading a java applet. The comp didn't crash though, i just pressed a key and it continued working fine. It was something with the modem driver. Just had to connect again. xshep, I use Internet Explorer 5.5, never upgraded it and not planning to lol. I don't have any ISP software installed, Startup items don't show unuasual things, i know what they all are.

System specs: Pentiom 3 866Mhz, 256MB SDRAM, 20gig HDD, motorola sm56 fax modem.

I don't know what to make out of this all, NAV don't find anything and housecall didn't either, Blackice is running all the time so i guess i'll have to wait and see if it happens again. Thanks for the advice.

I've used BlackIce firewall too, it doesn't stop outgoing traffic. It's ok when you use it together with another firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, for extra security, but just ZoneAlarm should work fine, at least better than BlackIce. And BlackIce tries to send info about your NetBios. I don't know what harm that can do but I didn't particularly liked it.
