onboard sound/sound card problem

i have an old p2 system that originally had onboard sound. i got a new sound card for it, and installed it, and it wont install. it says it cant find the hardware. i tried it in 3 different pci slots. i have found that what i most likely have to do is disable the onboard sound, but i cant find how... i tried disabling the onboard sound in the device manager but it still has conflicts. sound does come out now, but no programs can interact with the card(microphone for example). bios doesnt have the option and i didnt see a place for a jumper on the mobo. i dont know the brand of mobo, and when i downloaded a couple of those tools to find out the brand through the bios (from motherboards.org), it said brand not found. Can anyone help me on this?

i got the onboard sound disabled via jumper on board (it isnt showing up on bios startup now so i know it worked) and still when i install the new card (or try to) it doesnt recognize it right off and i have to choose "have disk" and then choose the inf file on the cd, and at that point it says it "isnt compatible do you want to use anyway" so i choose yes, and it installs all the components after that... the sound works, but i cant use the mic for instant messaging or recording in anything but sound recorder... any ideas now? thanks in advance

Like you I had onboard sound and I installed a PCI sound card . Did you go into the BIOS and disable onboard sound . In my system it was listed as AC97sound. Also make sure in the control panel that your sound card is selected as the preffered device in the sound and muliti-media properties. Good Luck,Nick
