Hi gang , I was wondering , is it better to leave your computer running all the time or should you turn it off once in a while? I always leave mine on all the time but I'm not sure if that's good or not . Will letting it run all the time hurt or should I shut down once in a while to let it rest ? Which is better? Or does it matter?

I'm confused about this myself. I've heard that shutting it down will be like turning a light bulb on and off over and over wearing it out faster. I just leave mine on all the time. Also when you turn it on and off it will be continuously heating up and cooling off which will create eventual cracking in the hardware, I don't know the relevance of this but I have heard it happen to pple.

As long as you reboot once a day, there no prob leaving it running all the time til the fan noise gets on your nerve, I turn mine off
because of that and also because I'm on cable internet and I dont like intruders while I'm away.

Leaving it on all the time puts stress on the moving parts. The more its left on the less time it lasts. What does this mean? Your HD will probably die 3-4 years earlier. This means you probably get 6 or 7 years out of it. Who keeps a PC for 7 years? blah blah blah blah blah.

The only suggestion i have is to shut down every night or every other night for no other reason than a reboot. Frees up memory? i really dont know :)

I used to leave mine on all the time, but when California started with its supposed energy crisis, I started feeling guilty and turning it off at night. I kinda like hearing it boot up first thing in the morning now. Like the morning coffee, ya know.

Why not compromise - turn it on after breakfast and off before you go to bed.

Tips :
- Cool, Man! -
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to prolong the life of your CPU is to make sure that it stays cool. Windows is a very CPU-intensive operating system, and adding heat to the equation just makes things worse. Most new CPUs have a CPU fan already built in. Always make sure that your computer has plenty of air flowing around it, and that nothing is blocking the cooling fan in the back. Heat is your computer's worst enemy--next to a nosy dog.

This is from Utne Reader, Nov/Dec 2001:

"More than 30% of America's personal computers are left running overnight and on the weekend, according to the US Dept. of Energy. By turning them off, notes Mother Jones [magazine] (Jul/Aug 2001), we could shut down eight large power plants and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 7 million tons a year."

There was a lively discussion on this thread about whether "on or off" was the best possible "Subject" in order to get the most help as soon as possible. I thought it was a valuable addition.

Why were all those posts removed?
