office 2k with funny characters

i got a msword file with the doc extension. when i tried to open it on my winME with office 2000, it displays a bunch of funny characters instead of what it was supposed to display. how do i solve this?? it asked me to install a format which i don't have, i did it but still no luck. please i need the file urgently!!
