I am running WinME on an AMD duron 700, 128Mb RAM. I fix computers for a living, but this problem on my own computer has me beat. Every time I try to get into outlook express, it hangs for a good minute or two, then I get the splash screen for another 2 or 3 minutes, and then finally I'm in Outlook express. I have similar hangs for when I go to "reply" or "create mail." I have tried reinstalling outlook express, updating it (It was doing this on 5.5, now it's still doing it on 6.0)
I have removed the files (inbox, sent items, etc.) in the "application data" folder (although it retains the account information, just not the folders) all to no avail. I suspect either OE is having a conflict with some Program or Driver on my system, or it has some internal conflict with my accounts. There are no other programs running in the task manager (except systray and explorer) and my resources are 92% free. Thanks in advance,
Jared

I have a similar set-up and had a simlilar problem with OE6 after uninstalling a modem-tweak program.
I tried all the remedies that you document with only short term results.
What finally cured my OE probs was repairing Internet Explorer 6 via the uninstall dialog in add/remove programs.
Why this worked I don't know.
Good luck!

Thanks casethejoint.
I repaired IE, but my problem persists. Nevertheless, I didn't know that you could repair IE from the unistall program, and I'm sure that will come in handy.
Jared

I had this problem and fixed it. it is in the microsoft database. You have to edit the registry to fix it though. Here is what to do:

I am running windowsme and have outlook express 6.0 and this fixed the problem. goog luck

Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. To resolve the issue of incorrect Pstore files, follow these steps on a computer running either Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

Type msconfig in the Run line, click OK , then click the Selective Startup tab.
Click to uncheck the Load Startup Group option, click Apply , and then click OK .
Restart the computer.
Click Start , and then click Find Files or Folders .
Search on pstore*.* .
Rename all instances found to *.old or *.aaa by right-clicking on the associated file and clicking Rename from the shortcut menu.
Pstorec.dll
Pstorerc.dll
Pstores.exe
Pstore.log
Psbase.dll
Click Start , and then click Run .
Type regedit in the Run line and then click OK .
Remove the Registry keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Protected Storage .
Reinstall Internet Explorer (either from the web or from the cab files).
Restart the computer again.
Click Start , point to Programs , and then click MS-DOS prompt .
Type C:\Windows\System\pstores.exe -install in the MS-DOS prompt window, and then press ENTER.
Type Exit , then press ENTER.
Close all programs.
Restart the computer again.
Open Outlook Express to see performance return to normal.

You can have it!!!:-) I'm an independent contractor - pays as good as people want to pay me. Thanks for the info...I'll try it out.
P.S. Windows Address Book also hangs...I assume they have the same problem.

If you work on computers you should know better than to be using Outlook. A better name would be "Inlook".

Ouch....You guys are heartless. As it turns out, it's for my Mom. She is already familiar with outlook express, and has a hotmail account (which no other e-mail clients support.) But, for the record, I do use outlook for my own hotmail account. I like the feature to have as many IMap, POP and hotmail accounts as I want without changing profiles or identities (which you can't do on netscape composer.) This makes it easy for my wife and I to check e-mail at the same time. SO LAY OFF!!! Just joking. Thanks for the input guys.
Peace out
Jared

Pay no attention...I have had the same problems...I fixed them by just simply going into the system applet of the control panel and removing the modem...reboot and let windows reinstall the original one...fixed it for me...hope this helps...

Some problems cannot be fixed by simply removing device drivers and reinstalling them. In fact MOST problems remain when you try this method. The modem would have nothing to do with the problem that Jared described. So please pay attention, read and try to learn. It could be a major frustration for some people if you keep giving them the wrong answers.
