I have a problem with my nVidia Riva TNT 2 M64 32 MB graphic card. Every time when I turn on my computer, this Stupid card just heat up straightaway. If I try to play some 3D games, it will heat up more to the point that it actually burns my finger. Then it will just crash and crash and crash my system again and again!!!!! I already installed the “Detonator 3” driver from nVidia (http://www.nvidia.com/products.nsf/htmlmedia/detonator3.html) and it is still the same. The following is my computer’s spec:

PIII 800EB MHz
Gigabyte Ga-6VXE7+ board
128MB SDRAM
15 GB HDD
nVidia Riva TNT 2 M64 32MB
Creative SB Live Value
17” monitor.
Windows Me
Running on 1024 x 768 at 32 bit colour

I had isolated the problem of my computer’s crash, and I’m 100% sure it is the Graphic card’s fault. After I formatted the C drive, and put back the Windows Me. (I don’t have to install the driver, because Windows Me already did it for me during installation.) The first thing I did was testing the graphic card in DirectX 7.1 and it will crash right away. Since then I has tried the following: installed the Detonator 3 driver, reduce the colour setting to 16 bit and run on 800 x 600, format C drive and install Windows 98SE, took the card out from the AGP slot and reinserted, and set the refresh rate to default rate, but nothing works at all. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Paul

Call me crazy but maybe you need a fan on the heatsink!

Is this a new card? Or a card you've had a while, but a new problem? If it's a new card, I suggest you exchange it, it's prolly defective.

that card should have a built on fan if it
doesn't take it back. Mine works fine.

I have almost the exact same system and mine has no fan on the card.Even overclocked to the point of lockup it barely gets warm.I would say either the card dosent like the mobo(doubtfull)because of voltage issues or its defective.Try it on another computer and see what happens.I researched this card extensivly in a effort to make it the performer I wanted it to be and have NEVER even heard of that particular problem. Not even once...I would really lean to the "defective" side.

Thanks guys, I’m really appreciate for all your support. I bought this card second hand about a week ago and it doesn’t come with a fan at all. The first owner bought it about 2 to 3 months ago, and he hardly use it for games. Maybe, this is the Australia version of nVidia RIVA TNT2 M 64 32MB that come without a fan (haa haaa….). So you guys think the fan is the key point here isn’t it? But do you guys really think a small little fan can make all the different? I will give it a try anyway, can anyone tell me what is the type, size and volt of the fan that best fit this graphic card?

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks Jimi, but do you use the same driver as I do? and what motherboard are you using? Do you run your system on 1024 x 768 at 32 bit colour? How far can you clock the core and the memory speed before the card give up?

I dont think this is your problem but ill tell you what. This card ABSOLUTLY HATES the d3 drivers. My benchmark scores dropped by 1000 pts(which is no big deal if gameplay is better)but its not.Framerates dropped and screen garbage increased. In a word-sucked!!
I run the 5.33 driver and get the best performance from any of em(tried em all). They are available at www.reactorcritical.com
To O/C it I tried "powerstrip" but the "control freak"software that comes with the 5.33 driver(or it used to anyway) works better and uses less system resources. As far as O/C goes i can crank it as far as the software will let me(160x180) without the card giving up but you end up w/a lot of screen garbage if its too high.I also run it at 1024x768x32 true. Before you run out and buy a fan, take the case off and put a big old house fan right next to the case to see if its gonna gain you anything. It probably wont but you never know I guess. The mobo is a Intell knock-off used by dell and its nothing fancy.Feel free to post back or write me if you have any more questions regarding this ok:)

I am having similar problems with my card! I think that the card is defective, sometimes I can go a full day without any problems and other times the card causes a crash with in seconds of booting my system? I think I might try getting a new card. What is the latest and greatest driver for this card anyways and where can I download it???

Hey Paul,

I'm using the same card as you are nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M 64.
Firstly, its a low end version of the RIVA TNT2 Series, and comes after TNT2 ultra, then NT2 Pro, then RIVA TNT2 , and then lastly, our card.

I' have a fan, on the CHIP, in my graphics card.
Ask your vendor about the CPU Cooler fans, and sow him your graphics card, and he'll find a appropriate one, but its the same cpu cooler , fan that pentium I uses , at the Socket 370.

I hope this info helps you out...

Paul,
Did you ever fix the problem? If so, what did you end up doing? I'm having similar problems with mine.

Thanks,
Tom

I have got the same card (NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 32MB). But my problem is different. My 3D game(Resident Evil 3) gets stuck when AGP Texturing is enabled in my Directx setup. It runs nicely when AGP texturing is dissabled. My CPU is P2 Celerone 300Mhz with Directx8.0 installed.
Can anyone tell what seems to be the problem?

Sankha.

Hey all - Just wanted to let you know that I, too, have an overheating problem with my Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64. Mine has a small heatsink on the CPU, and then a 40mm fan on top. The 40mm fan had died. I took one from my hard drive cooler, and all is well, except that I had to tape it on because the screw holes are in the wrong places. I'll have to buy the right one eventually but I can't find a place to get it - a Colorful CF-124010 (shrug). Whatever - it's probably time to get a GeForce 2 MX anyway - our cards are pretty old. But it still does what I want and it seems like a waste, so I'll probably fix it.
