I am running Windows Me. I recently noticed that my sound card was not working. When I went to my Control Panel I noticed that my USB drivers, sound card and bus controller were not recognized by the system. I removed them from my device manager and rebooted. The system recognized the devices and tried to install the drivers. However, the problem persisted. The error message was that NTKERN.vxd could not load the drivers. I searched my system only to find ntkern.vxd was not there. Could someone send me a copy of their Windows Me ntkern.vxd and tell me what directory it goes in ? Thank you.

you could extract the file from the installation disk yourself...
if a proprietary unit, you'd want to extract from c:\windows\options\cabs...
start - run - msconfig - click extract file button... "extract one file from installation disk"... if clone, restore from would be cd drive... if proprietary, as above... save file in should be c:\windows\system... (probably)...
should either give you an error or "file successfully extracted"...

The most common VxD (Virtual Device Driver) errors are:
configmg.vxd configuration manager for the motherboardntkern.vxd -- kernel driver used for the universal host controller
vcomm.vxd -- communications driver
vdd.vxd -- video drive device
vdmad.vxd -- DMA controller driver
vflatd.vxd -- video flat-frame buffer virtual device
vmouse.vxd -- mouse driver
The specific VxDs are in the *.CAB files on the Windows installation CD. Some are specific to their own version of Win9x. Otherwise the installation is straightforward.
WIN98: Look in Win98_47.cab and Win98_48.cab
WIN98 SE: Look in Win98_53 and Win98_54, or Win98_50 and Win98_51
WIN ME: Look in Win_20.cab and Win_19.cabInstructions:
1. Pop in your installation CD (and Exit the Setup, if necessary)
2. Open Windows Explorer and highlight the CD drive (left pane).
3. Next right-click (right pane) the correct *.cab and select View
4. Now highlight and right-click the *.vxd file you want. Select Extract
For Win98/Win98SE/Me extract to \Windows\System\VMM32 and \Windows\System
5. Close Windows normally, and Reboot
6. Check that the new VxDs are being used (the brackets have gone in Device Manager)

I upgraded from Win 98 Win Me, same kind of problem as Dan.
Plug & Play IDs my USB Ctl. as Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller.
Errors out in Device Manager with:
The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2).I extracted the files ntkern.vxd, vcomm.vxd, vdd.vxd, vdmad.vxd, vflatd.vxd and vmouse.vxd from CD into \Windows\System\VMM32 and \Windows\System. Rebooted, same error, Updated and get same error, Deleted and reinstalled device and get same error.
Any Ideas??
