After some updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com, my sound card and my USB ports dont work anymore. When I went to settings there is an "!" by SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio and VIA Tech 3038 PCl to USB Universal Host Controller.

I tried to search the internet for solutions but most of them are for windows98 and I have Windows ME, iif anyone could help my I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Sorry,
for the sound card it says:
The NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)

for the USB port is says:
The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)

For both of them it says:

To fix this, Click Update Driver to update the device driver.

When I try to update the driver it says:
the best driver is already avalible...

What do I do???

try removing the device from Device Manager, and then running the add new hardware wizard to re-detect it.

I removed them, added them again, and an error message came up saying I was missing sw\mwdm.sys, I downloaded that and tried it again. It installed the hardware but it still has the same error message and doesn't work!

hello
this is error code two for device manager
type> bus types. (Code 2)

Contact your computer manufacturer to get an updated BIOS for your computer.

where is ISAPNP, PCI, BIOS, EISA, or ACPI.

Solution button: None

When the device is not a root bus DevLoader, the following message is displayed

The device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2)

To fix this, click Update Driver to update the device driver.

where is the DevLoader such as FLOP, ESDI, SCSI, and so on.

Solution button: Update Driver
In addition to following the recommended solution, try removing the device from Device Manager, and then running the Add New Hardware wizard.

you might try updateing sound card driver.

Im getting the exact same thing after I did some windows update. Exact same error messages on my sound card and usb ports. (I have different devices than him though) My NTKERN.VXD was gone, so I reinstalled it to C:\windows\system and to C:\windows\system\vmm32 like stated on other threads Ive read but that didnt change anything. If anybody knows anything else Id appreciate some info.

Chalk up another victim of Windows Update.

My SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio and VIA Tech 3038 PCl to USB Universal Host Controller are now not loadable as well.

(Compaq Presario 5102US with ME)

Anyone having any success getting past this? I seem to have tried just about every uninstall/reinstall scenario there is short of reformatting and starting from scratch - which I'm getting close to doing.

I had the exact same problem, after running windows update on win-ME. It really ticked me off. I have a Compaq Presario 5100 also. At first i tried uninstalling my usb ports and sound card. That didn't work then i tried copying my usb driver files and the ntkern.vxd of the win-me cd, nope that didn't work either. Then I tried the latest via 4-in-1 drivers... nope that didn't work. Then I tried changing IRQ's in the bios.. nope that didn't work... Then I tried updating the bios... nope that didn't work... I was just about to format and put windows 2000 pro on this machine but i couldn't because because its not my pc and the owner would get ticked.. So I went and bought a new sound card and a new USB PCI card... CRAP that didn't work and im like WTF??? then i called a friend who works at MS he made some calls and and called me back 2 days later. The verdict: Microsoft has a known bug with 98SE/ME and DirectX 9.0a-b which can be fixed by reinstalling directX 9.0b.... THANKS MR. GATES for making me lose my hair before im 20! I HATE MS... IM GOING LINUX... LOL

I've had the same problem only with the sound drivers on my ASUS A7N266-VM
I've done just about everything I can think of, removed the devices, installed latest nForce unified drivers, reinstalled DX9.0b I even installed windows as a brand new installation on another hard drive and its doing the same thing there.
Any ideas?
