When trying to format my new USB portable HD I get the message:
"Not enough memory to complete format, stop other programs from running and try again"
Exactly what memory is this? Please see list of all memory info below:

Total Physical Memory 127.43 MB
Available Physical Memory 324.00 KB
Total Virtual Memory 974.46 MB
Available Virtual Memory 670.02 MB

That SHOUD be enough. Maybe the FORMAT command is corrupt. Try a fresh copy.

Why are you trying to format your new HDD? Don't USB HDDs come preformatted as FAT32?

And how much actual RAM do you have...128MB?

Thanks Mechanix2Go but how do I try a fresh copy, where will I find one?

Hi Jam,
Some do come pre-formatted I guess, my previous USB external HD(Phillips 40Gb) came with a copy of Nero and took just a few minutes to get operational so was it pre-formatted? I don't know but it worked ok, unfortunately it lasted just one month b4 crashing terminally - so much for buying top quality branded!! This time I bought off eBay from an outfit in Hong Kong, nothing wrong with that and as it turned out the guts of the new HD is exactly the same as the Phillips, an Hitachi Travelstar, but this came un-formatted. It is partitioned though, I managed to get it recognised (I think) by setting the BIOS to search for a new HD, but when I right click on the subsequent new HD icon, and then on the "format" drop-down, it stalls after 10secs with the message of not enough memory. I suppose it means RAM but I am unsure so that's why I asked the question. The memory info above I copied directly from my pc readout so, is the Total Physical Memory of 127.43 MB Ram memory? It's pretty close so I suppose it is. However the Available Physical Memory, 324.00 KB, is very small by comparison, about 0.25%, so is this why I get the message of low memory?
