following a succesful installation of ME over Win 98 I am now unable to add new hardware. All seems well until it tries to detect hardware or build driver database. The computer then just freezes and not even Ctrl Alt Del works. Any ideas anybody

I recommend completely formatting and then installing Win ME from scratch. You'll find that this will solve many problems, as well as making ME much smoother in general.

Have you checked to see how many IRQ's are free on your system? Try going o Device Manager and go to properties and you should check there to see if you have avaliable IRQ's for the new hardware.

Hi there , i also origanilly installed win me over win 98. big mistake. Do Not format your hard drive there is no need as i found out to late.

First you must install Win Me from outside of Win 98. Boot from stiffy disk or cd-rom . these changes are easy to effect in your cmos. This should solve all your problems . If win me still does not see certain pieces of hardware remove them and uninstall all associated software. Restart machine with hardware out ,shutdown once hardware removed .reinsert hardware and win me should see it . if you need any more help just ask.
