My opperating system is windows ME. I have two problems:-
1) I have got Norton 2002 which I want to install, however I am unable to do this because I can't uninstall all the components of Norton 2001 which cmae preinstalled with the computer, it does appear in add/remove programs section. How can I unstall all the files.
2) I have a bad sector on my hard-drive which will not allow me to defrag my computer. I have run scan disc however, it keeps telling me that it has restarted due to a program writing to my hard disk. I have closed all programs down. How do I find out what is writing to my hard disk?

1. I don't think you need to uninstall all the other norton programs bundled with the antivirus program just to install a new antivirus program because the installation will prompt you to choose waht to install in your computer. And also, If you run the setup program of the Norton 2002, upon the installation it will surely detect the old version and will be removed automatically if you continue with the installation.if you still want to uninstall all the other norton programs, you can go to its own program folder and look for the uninstaller file or in the add/remove like you said.

2.Try to boot to Safe Mode and close any other program running in the background except explorer and then run scandisk from there with the thorough option checked and also the automatically fix error option.
This process may resolve the bad sector in your harddisk. Perhaps, try to clean your harddrive first of the clutters and unneccessary files.

You never mention if it's an upgrade version which a previous version of the program is needed.

Your post is not specific enough. Is it Norton AV 2001 or Utilities 2001 or Systemworks 2001 you are trying to remove?

These programs are notoriously difficult to remove and it is important to completely remove them before installing the new one or there can be very bad compatibility problems. I agree with godz that you shouldn't have to do this but unfortunately you often do.

Norton have an excellent page of advice about removing Systemworks 2001 here and it includes a special uninstall tool
http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/docid/2001101612274407

Another way is to use add/remove, then reboot, then search the hard drive for any mentions of Norton or Symantec and removing those folders, then search the registry for same and removing those keys. Only then do I reinstall anything from Norton. And, while using LiveUpdate to bring Systemworks up to date again, I always disable the anti-virus programs in ctrl-alt-del before running Live Update. I have often found it necessary also to download only one update at a time, even to the point of expanding the + sign beside the update listed for a particular application and downloading only one of the sub-updates. It can also be necessary to reboot between each download of the sub-updates and to remember to deactivate anti-virus each time. It takes quite a while but it works and you then get a good install. If, after you download one update, you get a message which says "you chose not to install the 1 update available" ignore it because it is usually wrong.

I couldn't install Norton System Works 2002 even after I uninstalled SystemWorks 2001.

I had to use RegClean to clean the Norton remnants left in the registry.

Norton also has a free downloadable program called SymClean, a "Norton SystemWorks clean up utility." Why didn't they include that in the first place!
