I i was just wondering my antiurus seems to be working perfectly but i havent been able to download any updates for a long time it there jsut no updates or there a problem with my antivirus i check to see if it is detecting iruses by going using test file and it detect it is there jsut no update.!!!!
I have the same problem myself and have been wondering about this too, especially as my computer has recently been having problems that seem to indicate virus activity even though Norton isn't detecting the presence of any.
The fact that we both noticed the same thing must either indicate there simply haven't been any updates (although, it has been a LONG time), or we have the same software problem. If I find anything out I will be sure to let you know.
I have norton 2002 and manually do live update. There are always new updates once or twice a week so I would suggest you go to the site and start reseaching your problem.
Open Norton antivirus from the taskbar(bottom right)Left click live update at top.Follow instructions.Files are resume supported i.e you do not lose what you download . You may have to restart several times .Just follow the instructions and remember that it is somewhat repetitve. You may not get all you need in one take.Good luck
Further to the above you can configure norton to automatically download and install virus definitions which it will do once a week. the rest of the updates you have to do manually by left clicking on live update and being patient.
Weird.. I have automatic update enabled yet when i went thru the manual update i find a bunch of updates that i need.
Another thing.. Every time i go online my firewall asks if liveupdate can access the internet.. this makes me think autoupdate is working properly but its not. Why else would i be missing so many updates?
i have been triying manual update my antivirus 2002 for a while now but it does not download anything i oh yea the virus definitions appear to be current 11/21/2002
After manually installing the updates the date for definitions is still at 11/21/2002.
There are 62396 viruses in the list. Is this correct? Could someone please verify this and reply? Thanks.
I thought liveupdate updated everything. If it only updates definitions and not product updates.. whats the point? might as well remove the feature and require everyone to manually check for updates.
Any antivirus products available that have an autoupdate feature... that actually updates everything? Man i miss panda..
Ok.. i answered one of my questions. To have live update get all the updates automatically you have to open norton antivirus, click live update, click configure, click express mode from the general tab, then you can choose to have it start automatically or to being when you click start. I chose the automatically option.
I checked the virus list at symantec and they have two viruses for 11/22/2002 and they are supposed to be solved but they are not in my virus list. This makes sense since my last update was 11/21/2002.
I got this far... http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nav/nav_2002_info_solve_lu.html This is a list of possibilities for when the wrong date is displayed. I doubt any of this will fix the problem. If the problem was just the wrong date i would at least have all the definitions.
Anyone else got an idea?
I wasnt even going to read this thread and now i find out my antivirus is fudged. Thank god for david and everyone else.
hello ive been doing virus manual up dates since 10 days ago. i dont know what the problem was.ive been waiting for other to post, the same problem so i could, see if this was not just me.ether nortons done some thing to its live reg to stop piracy or a new virus has got us all:(
Thanks for the link www. I found that while searching symantec but the 3.5mb download is a bit intimidating here on dial up. Gonna give it a shot and post back.
On a side note.. for anyone else following this thread/ experiencing similar situation.. One of the suggested fixes is to download the current version of live update. This is a waste of time. Once i ran it i was informed that i have the current version of live update. I think this happened earlier when i manually updated NAV.
19% downloaded... and counting :)
Dave... that was my first thought.. preventing piracy or possibly preventing the long time bug where you can just reinstall to get a new year worth of updates :). We will see in a year :)
in version 2002 the (auto)live updates, are just for definitions, you have to click on live update, to get program updates. and monday through friday, you can manually download the intelligent updater, when live updates aren't available. in version 2003 the program updates are included with live update auto. with version 2002 when your subscription expires, uninstalling&reinstalling won't give you another year of virus definitions. even if you remove all entries from the registry etc. but untill you can get a renewal, you can turn off live update, then download the intelligent update, and set your date back in windows, to before the expire date, and it will install. a nice way to keep the viruses away, untill you can afford the renewal. or for a rebate offer, i've gotten every other version free after rebate, and came out $5. ahead on version 5.
I wanted ghost and found norton system works at ebay for $20.00. My panda subscription just ran out so i installed nav 2002 last month.
Just inlcuding this for anyone in search of antivirus.... you can usually find great deals like this at ebay or as www suggested.. the money back rebates might get all your money back :).
Am i correct in thinking this intelligent updater solved the problem with live update? Or.. will i be forced to download it every day to stay current?
My software & subscription are valid but i wasnt able to update to the latest definitions by using live update.
Im satisfied that at least i can manually stay updated but it would be nice not to have to do the download every day.
By tomorrow or the next day ill be able to test and see if live update is working properly now.
a few months ago, they did away with the daily live update, and only release the live update on wednesday, unless there is an outbreak, of some widespread virus, such as when bugbear was found, i think there were 3 auto live updates that week. when i bought version 1, for win95 they only released one update a month, and you always had to download it manually, either from there site using the net, or through a bbs they ran back then. as was the case for version 3, which was for win3.x and dos. funny thing that version 3 is older then version 1. and live update was added with version 5 but was not automatic.
I just tried liveupdate [maually] and it did infact download the updates. The next test is to see whether or not it works on its own.
Currently i assume the installation of the product update and the manual download of the virus definitions yesterday solved my problem. If the autoupdate feature doesnt work i will be changing antivirus software. Im way too iresponsible online to have an antivirus program that doesnt update itself.
Trev, thanks for the link. That was my biggest fear/gripe about this situation.
All of a sudden norton stops working? How many other people out there arent getting updates but think everythings fine since norton is running? I come here every day and i was going to skip this thread.. imagine the typical user..
I ran all the online virus scanners just to make sure and so far no infection has been found.
hello i ran the bugbear tool first day norton did not auto up date. and ran nod32,s verion as well. dont think its bug bear. but i do beleave there is a veary big problem. and this is only the tip of the ice berg.
