Comment:

I have been getting a message when I turn my computer on that says: "WININIT.EXE could not be found, Windows will not load properly (or something like that)" I've done searches here and with Microsoft and they have no solutions on how to get that file loaded. I even re-loaded Windows ME again, but still get the message. Any suggestions on how to get this file back. I have tried starting my computer with my boot disk in it, but it stills says cannot find file.

it should be in your windows directory. do a dir of you windows directory. Only way I know to get it by coping from another machine or reinstalling. Make sure you path is correct [ie includes c:\windows]

Thanks Wanderer, but it's not there. Somehow it got deleted...I guess. The only thing I've done in the past few days is load up On-Tracks Fix-It Utilities. I'm at a loss here.

hello
try these links
http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/32414.html
I went into safe mode and located system.cb, and pasted the contents into notepad to have a look at them... they seemed very basic, as stated.

I then did the same with a file I located names system.!~! and the contents seemed more what I would expect from a system.ini file, so I took a chance and pasted it into the worryingly blank system.ini file.

I then restarted... and my computer went straight into Win ME, and a sound file played on startup, and the modem works... so it would seem that the drivers for those are still present! I then ran scandisk, and no errors were found!

I am amazed this seems to have worked as I frankly know very little about computers, so fingers crossed, but I await problems!

I tried the solution that FJB suggested from Microsofts Knowledge Base...but that didn't work. On wawadave's...is the wininit.exe file part of the systen.ini? If so, I could try that, but if not, will it help? Thanks...still trying.

Mail me Jetsticks and I'll mail you the file - it's only 46Kb. My old ME setup also includes the files WININIT.SAV and WININITLOG.OLD so check if you have these too.

Thanks Mark,

I do have a wininit.sav and a wininitlog.old. Can I also use these to restore my wininit.exe file? If so, does anyone know how?

Thanks S.T.A.R. I'm still waiting for Mark to send me the files I need, then it looks like that may help. He must have gone on vacation for the holidays.

Jetsticks,

xxThe hyperlink I gave you shows(tells) you how to replace it. As I said it's in your WIN_17.CAB.

xxYou could use the one(WIN_17.CAB) on your HD or your Windows CD to extract it(wininit.exe) from and place it in C:\WINDOWS.

xxYou should have all of the files you need already :)

Good Luck
I'll Try :)

Thanks a lot to S.T.A.R. and Mark. Your help fixed me right up! I was having other problems that were associated with that missing file, but after getting re-installed like you all said, I haven't had any problems since.
