I am looking at a PC runnning ME which has no sound o/p.It has AC97 on board but I have also tried a PCI soundcard as well. For both cards Device manager shows no problems, however DirectX diagnostics reports no sound card found etc.etc.
also in "sounds&multimedia properties/audio the preferred options are greyed out.
Also when running DVD player "interactive"software says No Audio-error with audio subsystem.Anyone got any ideas.

BrianJP, SWAG, take a look at start>settings>control panel>sound devices and be sure the correct thing is being used and it isn't muted.

When I frist recieved my P3 750MHZ PC new ,it had intergrated sound(AC97),or as some call it onboard .This is sound that is already built on to the motherboard ! For some reason ,right from the start I was having sound problems ,sometimes when I booted up ,I would have sound ,other times no sound .I even had called the free support that came with my system and they where left scratching their heads ,on why the sound would no work consistantly ? My only option left was to box it up and send it back ,having to wait t least 3 weeks to get it back ! Another option I had was to install a PCI sound card ,a neighbor friend on mine is a C++ Programmer and has put together his own computers , opposed to buying already set up systems. We installed a Sonic Impact S90 Sound card. Instaling a PCI sound card is very simple task ,just follow the instructions that come with the sound card ! I have a very good speaker system ,and my PC now has fantastic sound that has never had any problems.
For your problem ,of course you should always check your speaker connections frist ,and then check you sound properties in the control panel and make sure that the AC97 is selected as the preferred sound device, right click on the speaker icon and make sure therre is no check mark in the mute boxes accoss the bottom ! You also can go to drivers.com and make sure you have the correct driver installed ,or try installing a new driver !
Good Luck Nick

Sorry to those who have read or replied to this post but I thought I had made the case clear.
All settings ( and mean all) are correct.
I have already tried a PCI card ,I did say that originally.
I think the problem may be that some windows files are missing/deleted,but as there have ,historically been several posts here, with the exact same problem albeit unresolved, I thought someone by now might have the answer.

hi brian. i had this exact problem of yours with windows me and for 6 months it had me stuck.yes, all settings were apparently present and correct- and mostly greyed out with no speaker icon.i went in to ms config and disabled all the processes which looked like sound card related files.then i removed the sound card and all of its drivers from the pc.i also removed the 'cmedia ac97' program from the hardisk, which was like an extra or summat. then i restarted and re- enabled on of the processes in the ms config box, and restarted. on startup it detected that there was a new device and that a number of windows files were missing. these files are on the ME disk, and i copied them back and it solved the problem.i also had to do another thing to fix digital playback with the cd drive- but try this first.

hope im not double posting but ive finally solved my greyed out audio properties by adding the line
drivers=mmsystem.dll under the boot section of the system.ini
