I lost the sound on my computer a couple of weeks ago. I removed the sound drivers and tried to reinstall them. My computer is not recognizing the new sound drivers. I was told that I will have to reinstall Windows to correct the problem. I am trying to find another solution before I erase my harddrive. Does anyone know how I could find the appropriate driver?

Thanks!

What were you doing when sound stopped working? What kind of sound card is it? Some things to try:

Check the Device Manager in System Properties for any errors / conflicts. If you see one, trouble shoot it. If not:

Remove the card from the Device Manager in System Properties. Uninstall any software that came with the soundcard. Restart your pc. Winme should detect and install the card. If you hear sound, you can reinstall any software.

Make sure the speakers still work. Hook them up to anouther source, such as a walkman or mp3 player.

If you added any new hardware, try changing the IRQ settings in your BIOS. Write down the old settings so you can change them back if you need to.

If the card is not recognized after all this, you may need to remove it from the device manager again and try moving the card to a new pci slot (assuming it is not integrated).

Thanks for your help. I wasn't doing anything when my sound stopped working. I just noticed that the sound icon (on the bottom right-hand toolbar) was missing. I may sound like a complete idiot, but how do I uninstall the software that came with the soundcard. (I removed the sound driver, but I didn't uninstall the software).

I haven't added any hardware to my computer.

Thanks again!

Denise

What sound card do you have?

Go into control panel and Add/remove programs. Look for the software in the add/remove list. There may not be any software for your card, windows can run most sound cards just fine. If there is none (like soundblaster), skip that step.
