No Sound with Windows ME

I just installed Windows ME on an older computer I 'inherited'. I have NO sound at all (other than the modem connect sound). Some programs that require sound tell me "PCI Multimedia Audio Device is not installed (Code 28)". Is this a typical ME problem? DO I just need a driver? I had sound before (w/windows 95)

Really need a little more info. Is the sound card intergrated or does it plug into a PCI or an ISA slot.
In the device manager is there a sound card? If not look in the device manager and see if there are any unknown devices.

i've found that ME picks up most sound cards that i've thrown at it. your card must be very old. with ME it pays to update all your drivers to the latest available.
