Comment:
Earlier I came home from work to find my computer boot up in 256 colours, 640*480 and without the sound working.

I got the display to work again by installing the latest drivers for my video card from the Nvidia website.

But with the sound I downloaded the latest sound drivers for my sound card from the Creative site. Installed them but it had no effect. I have a SoundBlaster Audio PCI 128.

The voluma control systray icon has gone. The option to turn it on in the control panel>sounds and mulmedia is greyed out. In System/Devices theres no conflicts or problems with the sound card.I've no restore point to revert back to.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

-HB

Horn Beast, first thing I'd do in your shoes is shut down and restart in hopes of some sort of 'computer gremlin' which would go away with a fresh start.
If that failed, next would be a look at 'sounds' in the control panel to be sure nothing was muted. As far as the option to display settings, take a look at your preferefces in the 'start menu' and be sure the option to display the sound icon in the toolbar is checked.

Problem sorted now. It actully turned out to be missing lines from the System.ini in the Windows folder.

After putting them in the sound worked and the options for the systray icon were there again.

Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

Hey HB, could you tell me what lines were missing in your sys.ini file? I'm having the same problem and could use a hand resolving it.
